To feel a bit sorry for friends DD?

I know this is none f my business but.....

My friend's DD (she is 14) was reading a book (not going to go into details and "out" myself - but it was made into a film and had a 12 cert).

Friend saw book had the word "fuck" in it and confiscated it.

AIBU to think this is a bit harsh (although I question a lot of censorship and said friend thinks I'm far too liberal!!).

My dad changed the newspaper we read because as a 6 year old I was reading it and asked what a lesbian was. According to him a decent newspaper wouldn't have that sort of word in it...
Later, my sister was studying DH Lawrence at A level. ''Women in Love' was being shown on TV and homework was to watch it. Dad forbade it as it wasn't decent. She was humiliated in front of the class as the teacher couldn't believe her excuse (insensitive teacher but that's another story).
30/40 years ago her situation was unusual but in 2012 the mother you describe is very unrealistic.

richmanpoor - Very funny! I remember during an oftsed inspection and autistic boy was saying fuck but fragmenting it into sounds F - U - C - K. The teacher I was working with said "Well done 'boy' good sounding out" haha

Most primary school kid's book are full of the word "Cunt" due to unsuccessful attempts at can't.

I don't allow my children to play violent computer games - I don't censor their reading though and I allow them to watch films with higher Cerys than their age as long as I am with them - sometimes its a good way of bringing up "difficult" subjects with them - we watching Dirty Dancing a few yrs ago and it opened a discussion about abortion etc.

My friends DD isn't allowed FB but I know she has a page her mum doesn't know about, mine do (over 13) on the proviso I am their friend and have thir password.

They (her and my older and younger DC's) wanted to go to the park down the road when they were here a while ago on a Sat afternoon but they weren't allowed as she wouldn't allow her DD to go because there would be people coming out of the pub drunk after the footie Hmm that they may pass on their way.

It's all a bit controlling and over protective IMO.

I'm guessing it's twilight (no need to say either way if you don't want to OP) - my DSD is also 14 and loves the movies, anyway. She hasn't read the books, I was thinking of getting them for xmas but wasn't sure what they are like - are they worse than the films? Because I wouldn't censor a book for bad language (that's a YANBU by the way :o) but as she is still quite young at heart I wouldn't want to give her a book full of sex. I haven't read it, is it ok for an average 14yo? (sorry for hijack)

It's not Twilight Grin

My DD read those when she was 11/12 - they've all seen the films.

They all turned off The Woman in Black though and won't watch it as they say it's far too scary Grin

No problem with my 15 year old reading the word. Were she to use it in conversation I certainly wouldn't be happy.

I remember buying my first copy of Mizzmagazine when I was about 13 and there was an interview with Owen Paul and he said "fuck" about 7 or 8 times - I thought I was terribly sophisticated Grin.

Didn't mean I then thought it was ok to go round with a potty mouth.

Mizz didn't have swearing in it did it?! I missed that!

Anyway thanks I will definitely get her the twilight books then. She really likes reading but tends to be a bit lazy in that she waits to be given something to read :o

YANBU.

When I was about 16, my friend's mum confiscated a CD from her because it contained the words 'dick' and 'piss'. She ended up bringing the CD to me so that I could make her an unmarked tape copy that she could listen to instead. So she still listened to it, and her mother had played her Loon Card too early.
