Head Injury at School

Hoping someone can give me some help and advice. DS1 (7 yr old) had a head injury at school this week, he was pushed over backwards in PE - it happens I know. His words were 'it really hurt and echoed through my head' :-(

He was sent to see the Receptionist in the school (also the First Aider - it's a very small primary). He was told to sit on the seat in Reception for what he thinks felt like 5 minutes.

DS states that his head wasn't looked at, nothing cold given to put on it - certainly no bump to head notification was sent home.

After 5 minutes he was told to return to PE.

On inspection when he got home he had what I can only describe as a sizable egg on the back of his head.

Trouble is DS is a bit 'drama' when it comes to injuries - he often comes home with a plaster or two for what I'd consider to be very small scratches that probably don't really need a plaster - we're working on this part! So I think there could be a bit of Boy Who Cried Wolf in this.

However the Receptionist can be susceptible to a grumpy mood or two and notably more so this week! End of term blues maybe?

Am I justified in raising this with the School Head? I would quite happily yomp over to the school myself and administer First Aid (I'm qualified) as I work from home if she was too busy to help DS - am I making a mountain out of a molehill here?

You should Definately have got a head injury slip from school so you know to monitor DC at home.

Think school have a pre printed set for DD who has at least 2 a week

Ask the class teacher in the morning to clarify what happened, when/how he fell, etc.
He should have had a bump note.
I assume the reason you know about it is because he has told you, rather than school.

The accident should be written up in the school's accident book and you should have had a letter. In our school children also get a sticker so everybody knows there's been a head bump and can look out for that child.

The first aider should also have checked him over although on my last first aid course a cold pack wasn't even mentioned so if the first aider has done the same course as me she may not have considered it necessary.

As said previously, check with school what actually happened - they should have a paper trail readily available - we do.

Oddly something similar happened to me this week - I was irked to say the least - but have seen the head and suggested implementing an injury type form which she seemed keen on doing. She also was helpful in agreeing that zero notification to parents isnt acceptable so I feel things will improve. The health of the children is paramount and I think its important to raise this in order to prevent a more serious chain of events occuring in the future.
God luck OP.

I am thinking that maybe they know what a 'drama' your DS can be and they looked at him and moitored him without adding to the drama.

That is what I would think if they did the same to my very own yr 2 'Drama', that they finally 'get it'!!

Ask for the story nicely, I am sure you will find that's what it is.

moitored monitored

I had a similar situation yesterday when my ds, also 7, bumped his head and cut it too, nothing done at school and no phone call home. The head teacher was very apologetic today when she found out no one had actually noticed! Absolutely raise it with the HT, they need to take all head injuries seriously.

What Sandstorm said. We (school office) also call parents after any bump to the head to inform them of the situation.

Thank you so much for the responses, I think it's a great idea to ask for the story nicely MammaTJ I'm thinking that's the route I'm going to take here.

Yep DS did tell me himself about the bump. I know he does frequently report injuries to the Reception area, so I do feel some empathy for the First Aider, but my poor little boy has a giant egg on his head! I'll talk to them tomorrow, I was thinking of putting it in writing, this seems a better way forward, to chat to them...hopefully I'll get some better answers this way.
