None of the above! Maybe count to 12, depends when and what you mean by count

Flobbadobs · 12/07/2012 14:30

Kindergarten is pre school nursery class I assume?
Recognise the letters in their own name, definitley count to 10, know at least part way to 20, Recognise simple shapes.
I think the teachers would have information for you on expected levels of attainment.

I didnt have any expectations for what DS would be doing at preschool.....I think they like them to leave being able to recognise their name, hold a pen, get changed independently and stuff like that.

DS started school when he had just turned 4, I cant remember now what he could and couldnt do although I do know that he couldnt write his name completely.

Sirzy · 12/07/2012 14:39

I wouldn't expect anything like that from a pre school age child. If they can do it great if not they have plenty of time when they are at school to learn.

StrandedBear · 12/07/2012 14:49

How old is kindergarten? 3/4yo? I'd expect to count to 10, possibly be able to recognise their name and write it, know shapes and colours,

Psammead · 12/07/2012 14:49

DD will be starting kindergarten at 3, which will be in 6 months time. I am also wondering what she ought to be able to do.

I think academic stuff is a bit of a bonus, tbh. She knows shapes, colours, the alphabet and numbers up to 20, and can recognise her name written down. But it's the day-to-day things I am more worried about like taking off and putting on own coat and shoes, being potty trained, playing games nicely, using craft materials....

crazyday · 12/07/2012 14:49

I know of 2 kids who were able to count and do simple sums and knew all their phonics but were sent away from 1st year of school and back to kindergarten for another year as they could not wipe their bums, put their shoes on properly, get dressed etc.

So don't worry about what will anyway be taught in school. It is irrelevant as this age and different in every country anyway.

But do concentrate on helping your dc gain basic independence by learning to get dressed etc

Oddly enough just had dd's school report. She went to nursery in the same school and they send the entire record home. So according to her report by the end of kindergarten dd could

  • read and write her own name
  • count to 20 and read and write numbers to 15
  • read most of stage one ORT
  • write very basic sentences
  • Look after most of her basic personal needs
  • count to 10 in French, Japanese and German and probably some others (she was obsessed with being able to count to 10 and kept asking various friends to teach her in their various family languages) Grin
  • knew basic shapes, colours
  • do basic cross stich and mix batter

So there you go!!

rogersmellyonthetelly · 12/07/2012 18:15

I would expect them to say please and Thankyou, sit still when asked,
Be able to put their own shoes on (not necessarily on the right feet) and be able to do a wee and wipe and pull trousers back up on their own. Possibly recognise a few letters and count to 10, but not necessarily know what the numbers mean, just that 3 comes after 2
