to attend an interview when I've just been offered a job?

I?ve just been offered a new job, having been made redundant as part of the public sector cuts. I?ve been applying for posts for months, but I?m very specialised and there just hasn?t been very much around that I could realistically commute to (I have pre school dc?s).
I have just been offered a post with a big family friendly employer, good commute, good t&c?s, bit of a pay cut and a step down, but still a good and interesting job. Now since I applied for this post they have messed about quite a lot, extending the closing date twice before finally interviewing me and making an offer.

In the meantime I have of course continued to look for a job and accepted an interview for another post (with a different employer), this post is more in line with work I have done recently. I accepted the interview before the offer the other job (IYSWIM).

AIBU to attend the second interview, not least to find out more about the post?

First time poster, long time lurker ;)

Yanbu

Attend the interview then weight up all your options! Well done you btw!

oooohhhhyes · 11/07/2012 14:01

Not U at all, very sensible! They're not employing you from warmth of heart, they're a business and you are a business person who is going to choose the right job for you. Better all round that way!

OddBoots · 11/07/2012 14:01

Of course not, you need to know what your options are and you won't know if you don't attend. People do it all the time - jobs do sometimes seem like buses!

hopkinette · 11/07/2012 14:02

Go for it.

onetiredmummy · 11/07/2012 14:03

Go the 2nd interview with a clear conscience. You have to do what's best for you.
If you decide to take 2nd the job then the 1st employer offers it to their second choice that's all. If you feel like it you could always make a point about their messing about as well :)

Good luck :)

scummymummy · 11/07/2012 14:03

Good luck! Hopefully you'll get both and be able to choose. Nice payback for all the worry about being made redundant. Well done.

Dolallytats · 11/07/2012 14:05

YANBU!! Good luck with your interview:)

WhereYouLeftIt · 11/07/2012 14:12

You should definitely go for the interview. You might find that it would be better for you.

suedpantsoffem · 11/07/2012 14:15

I imagine both employers interviewed more than one person, and an interview works both ways - you need to find out about the employer too. Go for it!

BobbiFleckman · 11/07/2012 14:16

get two job offers and negotiate for the one you want from a position of strength. Good luck.

throckenholt · 11/07/2012 14:17

Definitely go to the other interview too. Can you put off giving the original one an answer ? If not - just be honest - you have another option that you need to follow through on before accepting their offer. I am pretty sure they can't withdraw the offer as long as you don't take too long.

Abra1d · 11/07/2012 14:19

I used to be very proper about all this stuff but since my husband was made redundant 16 months ago and has been mucked around so very much by recruitment consultants and companies my mantra is now to do what gives you the most options. In this current marketplace you need to do whatever gives you the edge.

VegansTasteBetter · 11/07/2012 14:48

People are desperate for jobs atm. Go to this interview and if you like it better take that position. The first employer will just take whoever their second choice was.

CrikeyOHare · 11/07/2012 14:54

Definitely attend the interview.

Don't forget (and I think people do) that you are interviewing the employers as much as they are interviewing you!

If you are offered the second job and it's better for you, then go for it.

And congratulations, btw.

rabbitrabbitrabbit · 11/07/2012 22:19

Thanks all, was starting to feel guilty about attending the interview, but feel much better now!

verytellytubby · 17/07/2012 21:26

Well done! Which one are you going for?

rabbitrabbitrabbit · 17/07/2012 22:20

No idea, have to decide tomorrow which is fair enough.

Go for it! Years ago I had applied for loads of jobs and got interviews. I was offered the job after my first interview, I was so relieved that wasn't bothered about going for the second and I accepted the first job. Anyway my mum made me go to the second one and during the interview I realised how badly I wanted the second job. had a nervewracking wait for news, in the end I had to ring second employer up and say I'd been offered another job. It worked and I got it- am now in my dream job elsewhere in same field. I could kick myself for nearly not going! only bad thing was awkward conversation turning down first job after accepting. More than worth it tho!
