to think key stage 2 sports day shouldnt last a whole day??

i have dds in year 3 and 5. the lower ks2 dd has sports all morning and the older dd all afternoon.

in past years it has always been on 2 different days for different age groups. this has increased possibilities for parents/ relatives to take turns by watching one event each.

aibu to think that although overall time watching the sports may be equal to splitting it over 2 days, its actually harder for most parents to spend whole day on the field!

i do realise that for some it may be easier to take a full day off and be done with it, but this just seems worse to me!

actually, aibu to think that 3 hours (just the morning) might even be enough time to do sports for ALL 240 key stage 2 children and not have 2 events at all? hmm... maybe this would be pushing it...

what dyou think?

I think you will never find a way which suits everyone but I would rather get it done in one day than 2!

WorraLiberty · 11/07/2012 09:18

Getting it done in one day sounds sensible to me because as you say, it's probably easier for a lot of people to get one day off work, than have to take two half days/two whole days.

Also, they're trying to find a gap in the rain I expect!

My son has got sports day today and I have no idea how long it will be for. Hopefully no longer than 2 hours as to be honest I find the whole thing rather tedious. Once he has done his races I just lose interest.

You're lucky. Ds's school decided to have a mini olympics lasting a full 2 days, complete with opening and closing ceremonies. Even if you had the time, would you really want to sit on a school field for that long?

Mrsjay · 11/07/2012 09:21

when mine were in primary they always had it on the same day little ones in the morning and older ones in the afternoon after lunch , seemed more sensible was a bit of a pain when you have 1 in a lower year then you are back inthe afternoon but I guess it saves people taking time off work if they have more than 1 child at school ,

i'm probably being biased as i've just had surgery and so cannot manage a full day on the field health wise...Sad

i think working parents may favour the full day whilst SAHMs may prefer to split it. thats my theory Smile

My dd is in Reception and we had to suffer a whole day of it (also did mini Olympics with the requisite opening and closing ceremonies). She had a great time, but I'd have much preferred a couple of hours tbh. I had to take the whole day off and holidays are precious to me (work ft).

Hopeforever · 11/07/2012 10:26

Take a really comfy chair or even lounger and sit with your legs up all day. Or just pop in for an hour morning and afternoon. Ask teachers which race you need to watch

Or just say you can't go to either and rest at home. It's not as if it's the last sports day at that school

RevoltingChildren · 11/07/2012 10:27

Ours were done like that too (Yrs 5 & 6 morning & Yrs 3 & 4 afternoon) and I couldn;t get the day off partly because the previous day I had to take dd to a high school taster day and the following day was seimming gala (again Yr 5 & 6 morning Yrs 3 & 4 afternoon)

Its impossible! I couldn't get the time off.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 11/07/2012 10:46

DS1's sports day is a whole day event (KS2) so parents bring picnics and chairs and make a day of it. The children are allowed to join their families for lunch.

Perhaps it depends if the school has a sporty Head.

Imagine Seb Coe as a Headmaster. It would be sports week.
