Nahhh it's not.

AMumInScotland · 10/07/2012 12:00

But why is it dishonest? They own something and have labelled it accurately.

HipHopOpotomus · 10/07/2012 12:02

I'm not defending it, but I don't think it should be banned/legislated against.

There may be people out there who would love to own something that may or not be an actual nail from their actual imaginary friend's human son's crucifix. And if they have the ££ why shouldn't they have the choice to buy it? It's been going on for centuries all this alleged relic selling - well before ebay was even a twinkle.

Pandemoniaa · 10/07/2012 12:11

It's a far fetched and undoubtedly prosperous claim - although if you travel round Italy and visit reliquaries you'll soon realise that John The Baptist was anatomically unique given the sheer multitude of bits of him. If people believe this nonsense then that's up to them. Not a lot of harm appears to be done by it.

I actually find this less example less dishonest than I do the attempts to cheat people out of allegedly real items, as it happens. Like non-existent tickets for concerts, for example.

Wow, that's me put in my place right there!

Is that mean to symbolise finger brackets?

Different strokes for different folks I suppose. I dislike conmen but quite like irony. Can't all be the same can we.

I found it funny

LentillyFart · 10/07/2012 12:27

The item is listed and described as authentic. Further in the listing it claims to be a facsimile.

I suggest as many people as possible report the item as relics are prohibited anyway

Go to 'Report Item' > Prohibited and Restricted Items > Artifacts, Grave related items etc --> Artifacts, Fossils or Relics then Report

YANBU.

It isn't any different that someone clever scamming the elderly or vulnerable.

We all have personal responsibility over our intentions and peoplelike this are preying on others.

Because it's got Christian connotations, there isn't going to be much sympathy given across MN. We've already had the crap about Mary being a virgin, which was faulty translation/interpretation and nothing more.

valiumredhead · 10/07/2012 12:55

It clearly states the nail is not real but has shavings of a real nail inside it.

HipHopOpotomus · 10/07/2012 13:06

We've already had the crap about Mary being a virgin, which was faulty translation/interpretation and nothing more.

I never knew that was a translation issue - so thanks for clarifying that. Guess there's not been too much done to rectify the misunderstanding, and she is still referred to as the Virgin Mary/Virgin Mother and virgin birth is still mentioned etc. Probably not the thread for this discussion I know .......

So do you think this kind of ebay listing should be legislated against? Bearing in mind it's on the US site ....

MyDogShitsMoney · 10/07/2012 13:49

No worries lady the friend i'm buying it for has a rather offbeat sense of humour Grin

Love the cup... first proper laugh out loud I have had all day. Many thanks. As to the Nail? that shit is only there because there are folk out there ready and willing to believe it. Just that it is in dollars confirms my worst fears about that entire country. They are willing to believe most things. I give you Scientology and the rest.

ripsishere · 10/07/2012 14:07

about this then? for a more money than sense item

GrahamTribe · 10/07/2012 14:18

It's as honest as anything else in religion is. I do have to chuckle at the fact that the "Certificate of Authenticity" from Jerusalam should be a fill-in-the-dates document written in Latin.

AKE2012 · 10/07/2012 14:25

People put all sorts of things on ebay. Doesnt mean its wrong. Theres always some idiot with more money than sense out there. If someone wants to waste their money on things who cares.

ComposHat · 10/07/2012 14:34

No more dishonest than the whole rigmarole of religion. Telling people to put up with suffering because they'll be rewarded in heaven is dishonest. Taking collections from the poor to contribute to the gold laden coffers of some of the richest organisations in the world is dishonest

Agreed!

Mind you I have got a lovely new lot of authentic Turin Shrouds in machine washable (with matching duvet covers) and am doing three for two on the bottles of wine what Jesus converted from water. Just ask to see Honest Compo.
