to expect a new house to be clean?

When we moved in to our new house, it was absolutely filthy - dirty toilets, dirty cupboards in the kitchen... All the furniture in the master bedroom is fitted and EVERY SINGLE drawer boasted short, curly hairs. Don't even get me started on the slug infestation in the kitchen and the fact that the dishwasher doesn't work... freezer not been defrosted in, apparently, several years. I am not a particularly clean and tidy person, but I would be so ashamed to leave my house in such a disgusting state for someone else to move in... am I alone in this? By the way, the people we bought from were a middle-aged couple with adult children who appeared to be perfectly capable of using a j-cloth and some Cif, but it looks like they just chose not to. I understand that on buying someone else's house there will always be shoddy DIY. I can cope with that because I had the opportunity to notice that before purchase but am bitter about the slugs and gross hairs. Am I alone? Anyone have worse new house stories to make me feel better? Please? :o

Mine was filthy. There was a cardboard tampon tube on the bathroom floor, the dust from the landing carpet filled the dyson, grimy cupboards, windows haven't been touched in at least a year. I wasn't a happy woman, especially as I scrubbed the house I've just moved out of and the bloody bastards have not been in touch about refunding my deposit! Angry

Yanbu to hope it was cleaned. I'm the same - every time I moved I thoroughly cleaned the place. Our current house looked lovely on the surface (with furniture). The second I got the keys (an hour and a half later) and walked through the door I held back tears. It had obviously had an attempt to be cleaned but was still quite grim - oven was still dirty, they'd painted round the furniture! And despite having had a skip they left tonnes of crap behind - they said they would leave us the dishwasher and washing machine cos they were moving to a new build. We were chuffed because we'd moved from a new build. Neither of them worked! There was a stained (ew) mattress in the loft amongst other crap but the worst place was the garden.

They'd left the disintegrating shed full of crap - broken lawnower, spare bits of laminate. Behind the shed was several piles of grass cuttings, half a mop bucket, a broken hoe, a rake, a brabantia bin (broken) and a toad who had made his home there. We also found an old football, two 5 foot crow bars, a composting bin, champagne corks, popped party poppers and a water butt(hidden in the undergrowth). Oh, and a black lace thong Grin

We bought our apartment from a young couple and when we moved in everything - cooker, fridge, shower tray, the lot - was sparkling; they'd left a bottle of wine for us plus a list of recommended local restaurants, shops, etc. With a toddler and a baby to contend with in the middle of moving that was really impressive I thought, and much appreciated :)

When I texted to thank her she replied that the house they'd moved to had been left in a filthy state down to rotting food in the fridge. Not fair :(

The worst experience I've heard of is someone finding poo in the sink.

A whole one ^

Best was a lovely couple in their 80s who left a spotless house and 'care box' of teabags, ovaltine Grin, biscuits, sugar, loo roll and a bottle of milk in the fridge.

Our first house was left with broken stair spindles, broken bath panel, dust everywhere, carpets filthy and smelling of urine and the kitchen....they had put foil over the grill pan...hoping I wouldnt notice the 2 inches of grease and fat...

It was awful

I left everywhere spotless when we moved last year...we were in rented accommodation last year for 4 months (long story!) and after we moved out the new tennants rang me to thank me :)

There is just no excuse IMHO.

YANBU. When we sold our house I spent a week cleaning it/getting the garden spic and span. I left a bottle of sparkling wine in the fridge and a bouquet of flowers in the kitchen.
