to think that if you have a child with chicken pox, you don't bring them into the playground and let them play with other children?

I know this has been done before but I was still Shock this morning when one of the other mums brought her youngest child on the school run this morning and afternoon and happily mingled in the playground as usual and let other children play with the chicken poxed-child.

And before anyone says it, this morning both her and her husband came to school so one of them could have stayed at home with the poorly one!

I am not bothered about my 2 as they have already had it but still was very Hmm about it - so AIBU?

I remember when a child in my DS class had chicken pox. He was 4 at the time. Needless to say, he caught it, passed it on to DD and I got it a second time.

When he eventually went back to school one of the other mums asked why he'd been off for so long. I explained that he'd caught chicken pox and she replied: Oh, he must have caught it off [child name]. I sent him off to school with it. I didn't realise it was that contagious.'

Over half the class ended up off with it.

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 09/07/2012 20:51

Are they just not contagious when the spots are scabbed over? Or is it when they have the spots they're not contagious?

I genuinely don't know.

But if child is still contagious then definitely should be away from school. Although its not the end of the world if a healthy child gets it, it's young babies and vulnerable/ I'll /sickly children it can be dangerous for. So agree with you there.

Huffles that is Shock but surely the school would have realised and sent him home??

The child in question is not yet 2 so not at school but still amazed parents thought it was ok to bring her into the playground - the mum mentioned that 4 children from her nursery had been sent home last week so she is well aware that they are not meant to mix with other children!

she should have done all possible to keep her chilld away from others.

phantomnamechanger · 09/07/2012 20:56

they are at their most infections BEFORE the spots appear, so most of the time you wont KNOW if you have been in contact with a CP child.

once all spots have scabbed/dried then no longer contagious

I guess in this case they figured that the child was up there in the days before the spots, so the damage was already done??

when DD had Cp we have no idea where she got it - not at play group or nursery - must have been some random stranger who had sneezed in tesco or touched a door handle with their snotty hand....

DowagersHump · 09/07/2012 20:57

YANBU - I went on a camping holiday once and a bloke brought his (not scabbed over) DS 'because he had been looking forward to it'.

Bloody selfish and crap behaviour

Huffles · 09/07/2012 20:58

He did get sent home but only when they noticed more and more spots (realising what it was off their own backs despite the mum knowing).

Everyone used to say you can only catch it the once. Pfft I've had it twice and I know of someone who's had it three times.

ceebeegeebies · 09/07/2012 21:08

I know the spots only started appearing yesterday so there is no way they had all appeared and scabbed over by this morning!

I suspect DS2 may get them again as he only had a mild dose when he was 10 weeks old so I believe that they can catch them again as it is not enough to make them immune - don't know it this is actually true or not Confused

Def not bu! My child has febrile convulsions with a fever still at the age of 6 and many other complications. I can't see my bf for a week because his two have hand foot and mouth but the mother still thought it appropriate to take them both to the zoo on Saturday. Even knowing how badly it can effect some kids through knowing about DS (me and bf on very friendly terms with her)

Smokedsalmonbagel · 09/07/2012 21:52

Very annoying. Same thing happened at our school.

Some people just don't know any better and some really don't seem to care about anyone else.

Pisses me off!
