I have a job interview tomorrow and I am a nail biter. They are very short but I do bite them very neatly :D

Should I go to my interview normally or should I put on some short false nails? The job is working with kids and I don't want them to think I would be biting them at work etc

Am I over thinking this? Do interviewers check things like fingernails and groomed hands? I have glue, nails and polish here, just need a few MN opinions please!

Be brutal... I love it ;P

clean and file them so they are neat and tidy dont use false ones its weird when you work with kids

EarnestDullard · 09/07/2012 18:12

As long as they're short and neat (and clean!) I wouldn't worry. Unless you're interviewing to work as a nail technician Wink

EarnestDullard · 09/07/2012 18:13

Oh, just saw that the job is working with kids, so probably not a nail technican. Must read properly in future.

WorraLiberty · 09/07/2012 18:13

I can genuinely say that out of all the teacher interviews I've ever sat in on, I have never noticed anyone's nails.

Johnnydeppsnewmrs · 09/07/2012 18:13

Erm, I wouldn't have thought they would want to see you in false nails to be honest. Surely they would view them as a hazard?
I would just scrub your nails so they are as clean as possible and leave it at that.

OldGreyWiffleTest · 09/07/2012 18:13

I bit my nails for 30 odd years and it never stopped me getting a job. Just make sure they are filed and clean. Good luck with the interview.

Johnnydeppsnewmrs · 09/07/2012 18:14

FWIW - we were not allowed nailvarnish or false nails on, and we cared for children.

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 09/07/2012 18:14

I have crap nails, but I don't notice other people's nails or hands unless they are wearing long blingy falsies

Yama · 09/07/2012 18:17

I wouldn't bother.

BadgersRetreat · 09/07/2012 18:20

i agree with above - i bet they won't even notice. You are overthinking a bit.

just get them as neat as possible and don't bite them DURING the interview and you'll be grand

i was a nailbiter for years too.

squeaver · 09/07/2012 18:22

You'll give a much worse impression with false nails, imo.

angeltattoo · 09/07/2012 18:23

Agree, CLEAN, neat, i'd also personally apply a coat or two of clear or natural polish so they shine and look healthy.

I interview a lot, I look at nails, but I look for clean and neat - only remember one case of absoutely chuffing filthy and one case of badly chipped bright polish. Short and clean, never a problem...nail biter here too BTW!

Good luck!

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 09/07/2012 18:25

Forgot to say Good Luck!

Good Luck

valiumredhead · 09/07/2012 18:28

Tidy them up and make sure they are cleaner than clean - no false nails!

Kayano · 09/07/2012 18:39

I wasn't talking about crazy false nails, just really short ones that would look natural. I'm just stressing the small details tonight...

Next issue: hair. Up or down? It's shoulder length but I have jowels (is that how you spell it?)

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 09/07/2012 18:42

Down if you have jowels

But seriously, chill out about how you look and concentrate on how confidently you might answer any questions....that's all that really matters - friendly and confident.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/07/2012 18:46

No to falsies. Short and clean is important. Also, my top tip for giving up biting after 30 years is... go and work in a really badly run, dirty homeless shelter. I did and gave up overnight. My hand would creep towards my mouth, then I would realise.

Hair either down and neat or up (but I would go for down).

TheMonster · 09/07/2012 18:48

YABU to use this section for such silly worries.

Kayano · 09/07/2012 18:52

I have my answers (most of them!) prepared and practiced. Hence the stupid little petty worries tonight

Grin

Thanks everyone!

I you think you will feel really self-conscious with it up, have it down. But if it's quite long, then I think tied up is more professional

MammaTJ · 09/07/2012 19:59

Short neat and clean definately not false!!
