To expect M&S to sell 100% cotton shirts for school (in their stores)?

Went to M&S to buy some schooliform for DD who starts secondary in Sept, with the 20% off in mind.

Disappointed when we took some shirts (ones where you can tuck them in and button the collar) to try on to realise they were all 65% poly 35% cotton, ick, they go discoloured and horrid.

DS1 is in yr 8 so got him shirts last year and year before from the shop I am sure and they are all cotton. There were racks and racks of shirts so plenty of room for a few cotton ones for us nutty lentil weavers (?!). But no, I need to order them, pay postage or go and pick them up again. grrrrr

YANBU but I think those whose children prefer the feel of cotton or who want them to last are in the minority compared to those who don't want to have to iron them.

My DD now has the bib and collar part of her school shirt sewn into her school jumper and the rest cut off so she doesn't have to endure the polyester feel she can't bear.

Perhaps you were unlucky with your store. They carry them in the (two) M and Ses I shop in.

Could it be they've sold out because they have a big 20%-off sale at the moment?

Irritatingly, dh has banned me from buying 100% cotton: he says it's too difficult to iron. But I think the non-cotton ones are horrible for young sweaty people.

Clary · 08/07/2012 23:39

Oh is it about the ironing?

Hmm I like ironing and would iron any school shirt anyway. But I am aware that I am odd in a minority.

Was a big store (only one in my big town / small city). The assistant didn't say they had sold out, seemed to imply simply that I just had to order them. Have done so anyway.

I am full of sympathy for you Clary. And, just to say, when dh says: "Too difficult to iron", ha actually means "... these other ones need noironing. Hurrah!" I think he's being bonkers but he's the one who actually irons ds' shirts, so it is up to him.

AnyFucker · 08/07/2012 23:49

you what ?

I was in M+S today, and there were 100% cotton shirts for school uniform

Clary · 09/07/2012 00:16

What kind of M&S do you have AF?

I am in Derby. Maybe it's not a big enough store

Never had any trouble with any school shirts, M&S or sainsbury's discolouring, but poloshirtsAngry

DD2 and I gave up she's worn blouses since Y2. She broke her arm and couldn't get a polo shirt on. Bought some very cheap sains. blouses and discovered they stayed white. Not grey with beige collars.

NoComet · 09/07/2012 00:25

Poly cottons fine, 100% cotton needs ironing and this rabbit does not iron!

Clary · 09/07/2012 00:28

DD can't really wear polycotton (not that I would want her to anyway ick, sweaty) as she is prone to ecxzema (sp???) and it might cause a flare up. All her tops/jeans/socks/vests/pants etc are cotton.

I rather like ironing so that's not a prob.

I was just surprised as all their polos are 100% cotton so what's with the 1970s button shirts?

this on?

gatheringlilac · 09/07/2012 00:45

It's true that we have a lot of large M and S stores near us. So it may well be that your store is too small to carry the full range, Clary.

AnyFucker · 09/07/2012 09:19

we have quite a flagship store, OP

try online ?

EldonAve · 09/07/2012 09:22

YANBU
I couldn't find the school cardis I needed and that was in M&S Marble Arch

footphobic · 09/07/2012 11:19

The largest store nearest to me is nearly an hours drive and even then their school uniform selection is small at any other time than the big sell for back to school in Sept, they barely have 20% of the full range available most of the time I'd say. The website always has the full range on though and usually good stock levels, so I always order from there, plus free returns. So much easier; school uniform shopping is not my idea of fun.
