to think "how to train your dragon" is not suitable for a 3.5 year old?

Lots of it is fine, but specifically the scenes with the fight with the big scary dragon at the end. DP thinks I'm putting ideas into DS's head by suggesting it is scary.

I think he's just too young to see those kind of images?

Please could I ask, if you've seen it, what age do you think it's suitable for?

Also, if you think IANBU, please could you help me explain why to DP?!

Mine have watched it quite a few times. First time ds1 was 5 and ds2 and dd were 3. All of them loved it and didn't find it at all scary. Saying that DH lets them watch Lord of the Rings (against my wishes) so How to Train Your dragon is probably quite tame in comparison.

EndangeredOtter · 07/07/2012 21:33

Dd is 2.5 and LOVES the 'dinosaurs' was not bothered by the end scene. So yes YABU.

azazello · 07/07/2012 21:33

My DS is 2.8 and loves it because he is very into dragons and dinosaurs. He watches it cuddled up with me and DD and closes his eyes/ hides behind me if he gets scared. He seems far more scared if the Disney princess U rated films and the Thomas the tank engine film because the situations are more 'real'.

CuriosityCola · 07/07/2012 21:34

I think it depends on the child. I find that pg movies can be difficult to decide on. Quite often the parts you worry about don't bother the children and it's something you hadn't considered that isn't age appropriate.

As a side point. I really didn't like the 'message' behind that film.

Dprince · 07/07/2012 21:35

No it would cause nightmares for dd.
Did you really want to know if yabu or were expecting the majority to agree with you. You seem very shocked that not everyone does agree with you.
Is there a reason you think your dp is wrong, does he not know your child that well?

JarethTheGoblinKing · 07/07/2012 21:35

Ahhhh, I love that film. Favourite of DS too since he was about that age. It's never scared him (dungeons and dragons and Thundercats freaked him out though).

If your DS is fine with it then why are you worrying?

JarethTheGoblinKing · 07/07/2012 21:36

curiosity - what message?

YouBrokeMySmoulder · 07/07/2012 21:36

Mother, yes I would think so but in this case. No. My dd seems to cope fine with cartoon fights/dragons etc than she does with real life stuff even when they are the same certification.

I am by no means lax either, ds has only just watched LOTR and he is 9.

I remember as a child that the childcatcher from chitty or any doctor who episode being far more scary then fantasy monsters.

Meglet · 07/07/2012 21:37

Star Wars is a U and 5.7yo DS still refuses to watch it as he gets scared after a few minutes .

Dprince · 07/07/2012 21:38

It wouldn't cause nightmares for my dd.

YouBrokeMySmoulder · 07/07/2012 21:38

Curiosity- in what way? I far prefer it to disney princess films for dd, Tangled and Princess and the Frog excepted.

alicethehorse · 07/07/2012 21:39

DS said he was scared. DP reckons I'm putting the idea in his head.

I think it's not worth the risk that it is scaring him. Why not simply watch something

AnnieLobeseder · 07/07/2012 21:39

Depends on the child, I guess. DD2 watched it at 3.5 and loves it. It was the DDs' favourite movie for ages and they watched it almost daily.

I think your DP may be right about you putting ideas about it being scary into his head.

alicethehorse · 07/07/2012 21:40

*something else

itsthequietones · 07/07/2012 21:41

Dd1 watched it at the cinema when she was 5 and loved it, still does. Dd2 is 3.5 and has seen it a few times, definitely not scared of it, she loves dragons.

At nearly 4, I had to take dd1 out of a pantomine as she was terrified of the giant.

It just depends on your child really. If you feel uncomfortable with your ds watching it just put it away until you think he'll be ok with it.

YouBrokeMySmoulder · 07/07/2012 21:41

Meglet, that is annoying. GrinHave you not started with Episode 1 though, work your way back upto 4?

My dd is 3.7 and its her favourite film. She also has the sequel to it.

MavisGrind · 07/07/2012 21:43

This is currently my dcs favourite film (age 6&3) and they have not been scared by it at all. My 3 year old asks for it constantly and genuinely loves it.

It's an animation. About dragons. ( and my dcs think toothless is like one of our cats).

I suppose it depends on the child..

It is difficult to predict what a child is going to be scared by though, dd2 was terrified by the problem blob in Numberjacks, she saw it once and had nightmare for weeks. Beast in Beauty and the Beast was ok though, because he was furry.

Dprince · 07/07/2012 21:43

Its possible your dp is right. Its very difficult to say from behind a screen. Children do look to their parents and if you keep telling him (or saying it while he is there) he will be scared he will be. Or he could be scared.
I am confused as to why he is scared of he hasn't seen it. Does he not like dragon/ dinosaurs etc?

alicethehorse · 07/07/2012 21:45

"It just depends on your child really. If you feel uncomfortable with your ds watching it just put it away until you think he'll be ok with it."

I wish it was that simple. I think DP generally lets DS watch stuff that's too old for him, and I wish he'd respect my view on this even if he disagrees with it.

If he said he thought something was too old for DS I'd respect his opinion.

"I am confused as to why he is scared of he hasn't seen it."

We watched the whole film together, we were all enjoying it. It was when it got to the big scary dragon at the end that it got scary.

DS was terrified by problem blob in Numberjacks as well! I thought he was the only one :-).. I think How to train... is fine and has a nice message as well.
