Its alright to let DD have a big slab of chocolate cake and a milk shake and the snooty woman who was sitting at the next table going on about it being no wonder there are so many obese children should keep her nose out of our business.

IMHO DD had used a lot of energy and there was nothing wrong with a treat

Worral I have never experienced it either, although I have only been a parent for 4 years.

LittleMiss what a shame :( I had to pick DS1 up from preschool early the other day and arrived in the middle of snack time. They were all scoffing down some cake they had made, it was brilliant!

seeker · 07/07/2012 18:57

I never come across people like this either.

But I never come across "cat's bum mouth old biddies" or cold shouldering "school gate mums" either.

BBisHavingAnotherBBaby · 07/07/2012 19:01

If worra in RL is at all like the candid Worra ive seen on MN then I wouldnt fuck with her Grin

mama i did indeed.. All of 2 days then fled the holiday prison camp simply could not hack it!

To be fair i have had many more positive comments than negative but this one stuck with me

MammaTJ · 07/07/2012 19:21

Then BB you should have ventured in to the town more. We locals are lovely!! We can even be civil to 'naice' grockles sometimes Grin

BBisHavingAnotherBBaby · 07/07/2012 19:22

Haha we were so disheartened by the camp we gave up, poor DS broke a leg there despite park medic saying it was fine

LucieMay · 07/07/2012 19:26

I'm a terrible mother and always feeding my son junk food in public and no one has ever made a derogatory comment but then I'd tell them to fuck off and mind their own business if they did.

MammaTJ · 07/07/2012 19:30

Oh dear, BB did you go to our MIU? They are very good there. Unless it is not Mon-Fri 9-5, in which case there would be noone to x-ray!!

I have been told both my DCs did not have broken arms, when in fact they did. The same doctors from our local surgery man the hospital and the prison holiday camp.

You should have asked if she had just finished four hours of excercise and if the answer was no - tut tut, what a hypocrite!

Yddraigdragon · 07/07/2012 19:38

I would be tempted to tell her (sweetly) that you are trying to bring your children up to be kind and mannerly, and that if they have nothing nice to say they should say nothing... Would she agree that it is so much easier to make this a rule when adults nearby are not QUITE SO RUDE!????

anothermadamebutterfly · 07/07/2012 20:04

I have never come across these people, but I think I would find it would find it hard to keep a straight face if somebody got all outraged and started commenting on my DC eating cake and milkshake in a cafe on a Saturday afternoon.

lovebunny · 07/07/2012 20:12

sounds like your dd is a very lucky girl.

OhDearNigel · 07/07/2012 20:14

Unfortunately she's achieved her goal - which was to get to you

Do you care about other people's ill-advised opinions formed on half-information ? Of course you don't. So don't let it bother you

katykuns · 07/07/2012 20:28

Never understood why people feel the need to justify their child eating 'unhealthily'... its depressing.

Even worse is that other people would actually be so fucking stupid to judge a child having a cake and milkshake :S

I've never had it happen, but I do get some snooty looks doing things with my DD.

Btw OP, your daughter doesn't need to do hours of exercise everytime before eating some cake, she's not going to suddenly burst out in blobs of fat...

ontheedgeofwhatever · 07/07/2012 20:50

Grin dd does get cake without hours of exercise first but i do encourage her to exercise. I'm overweight and never really did much exercise as a child so I want her to find things she enjoys and take part in them happily as she gets older.

I agree though she is a very lucky little girl

GrassIsntGreener · 07/07/2012 21:16

My child has a high calorie diet and with that comes a place for cake and snack food (we eat v healthy balanced food at home, she just has butter on her veg, items we bake she has fried in healthy fats etc and she luuurves veg/fruit) I'm lucky I've not experienced such rude comments but I'm conscious of 'looks'. She's always been small too so looks younger than she is.

ariadne1 · 07/07/2012 21:27

Depends a bit on whether your DD is overweight. Is she?You don't say.

Hexenbiest · 07/07/2012 21:39

I've met a lot of people like this. I could conclude it me giving off the wrong vibes and I expect that is part of it.

However we used to live in a more affluent and friendlier area then we currently do and we never got comments like this. So I think it is also a feature of locals here who are bloody rude and very nosy vocal and free with their mainly pig ignorant and often nasty opinions on many topics.

shebird · 07/07/2012 21:49

YANBU assuming your DD is not overweight then there's no harm in treats and it was every rude and insensitive of this women to comment. Not very nice or our DD either to hear these comments. I mean would you go up to a very skinny person eating a salad and say 'its no wonder you're anorexic you have some cake' tut tut!

seeker · 07/07/2012 23:12

Depends a bit on whether your DD is overweight. Is she?You don't say."
It doesn't, you know!

ariadne1 · 08/07/2012 11:50

we'll have to disagree on that Seeker. If I had a fat child I would not be buying the a ' big slab of chocolate cake'

seeker · 08/07/2012 13:55

But no reason for anyone else to comment. And anyway, even if you did have a fat child it would be counterproductive to never buy any food treats at all

ontheedgeofwhatever · 08/07/2012 18:49

For clarity DD is not overweight and certainly not fat

OP posts:
ariadne1 · 08/07/2012 21:24

seeker- I agree. There is no excuse for others commenting! That is downright rude.I wouldn't disagree with small occasional food treats for a fat child, but not a big slab of chocolate cake! A tiny one would have been a treat.
