The Olympic Torch...

...is going to go past the end of my road in about half an hour and I really have no interest whatsoever in gazing in awe at it. I semi buy into the Olympics being a 'Good Thing' for the country but then looking at the state of the country, still not sure. AIBU to be missing a 'once in a lifetime event????'

I have been involved in it all as have been responsible for organising volunteers to do the stewarding - possibly partly why I'm sick of it

I was not bothered, so went to gym whilst dh and kids went today.

They thought it was fantastic and really enjoyed the great atmosphere.

They're now thinking about going to see it tomorrow too.

SecretPlace · 07/07/2012 20:57

I have never been as proud as when I saw my friends fiancé, holding the Olympic torch in his wheelchair. That was a once in a lifetime experience.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 07/07/2012 21:01

Can you be bribed scamp?

sweatyscamp · 08/07/2012 11:31

no sadly not - I would be killed :( I expect it's known by now..

Not in the slightest bit interested in anything to do with the Olympics. Dcs not bothered either, dh however keeps trying to must up some enthusiasm but it's now working. No idea if they will go to visit the torch but I will be staying at home - hope everyone who goes get nice weather and has a lovely time but it's just not something I can drum up the slightest bit of excitement in.

Stood in the rain on Friday morning as Dd's school has really been bigging up the Olympics so felt we had to do it for her. It wasn't as bad as we feared, got a spot near the end of the route and a clear view too. She enjoyed herself which was the main aim. The funniest thing was the motorbike police giving everyone hi-5's on their way past Grin

Trioofprinces · 08/07/2012 11:58

I'm glad we went. It was drizzly but there were lots of people, and the atmosphere was pretty good.

annalovesmrbates · 08/07/2012 12:03

Waves to Lee and Kveta! I live near you too. We had a much better spot just before it left town, right by a changeover spot. DS had his photo taken right next to the torch bearer with torch. A lovely morning that DS will remember.

LeeCoakley · 08/07/2012 14:48

I didn't think about going to see the final leg because I couldn't think where to park. Homebase maybe? Was a local person running at the end? The first was a Chinese national I think and not local at all if you read the hoohah in the Observer. But he still looked proud and we cheered loudly!

annalovesmrbates · 08/07/2012 15:43

Yes, Homebase or the old Playspace or at my mum's house! It wasn't a local man running but not one of the Chinese people. Local councillor is up in arms about it all too but everyone I have spoken to had a brilliant time regardless of who the runner was.

bruffin · 08/07/2012 16:16

DH got a ticket to see it being taken round the Olympic course at the white water centre yesterday. The torch went out the first time and they had to go round again, but DH really enjoyed it, said there was a good atmosphere

sweatyscamp · 08/07/2012 16:26

what's the issue with a chinese chap then?

I gave a whole 30 seconds thought to going into town, or even bagging a "prime" spot on the Trinity lawns at 5:45am in the rain this morning before deciding that I wasn't really all that bothered.

If that makes me unpatriotic etc, so be it. At least I was (a) dry, and (b) asleep.

Empusa · 08/07/2012 16:29

Looks like the torch should be arriving in my town right about now. Thankfully nowhere near me.

jamdonut · 08/07/2012 16:31

YABU - it passed right past our school. We made a day of it! It was truly exciting to feel part of something. The crowds were great and we were lucky with the weather!
One of the torchbearers brought the torch into our school a couple of weeks later, for the kids to see up close. They were really excited, and he wore all his gear for them!
But hey, if that's how you feel about it...

LeeCoakley · 08/07/2012 16:45

Choice of torchbearers spark anger

EssexGurl · 08/07/2012 18:43

I felt a bit like this last week - at my parents and me and my dad weren't going to go. But then thought we ought to and both were wowed with it all. Saw it again at home this week and still got a bit of a tingle down the spine. Thought it was wonderful thing to bring people together and it was fun, even in a bit of rain. I think, having seen it, you are being a bit unreasonable.

LeeCoakley · 08/07/2012 18:52

My mum saw it Friday at the top of Pier Hill in Southend and said the atmosphere was fantastic and she was glad she'd gone because she wasn't going to bother initially.

Glittertwins · 08/07/2012 19:01

Got totally soaked this afternoon and they were a little late with it as well. Got great camera photos and video of it all though - well done to our local chap who did the part we saw. The DCs had fun running around in the rain whilst waiting.

Glittertwins · 08/07/2012 19:02

Ah yes, ElizabethPonsonby - the high fiving Met officers were well received here too Grin

sweatyscamp · 08/07/2012 19:53

Thank you Lee - interesting stuff..
