to want to challenge SILs comment and not know how

Apparently she hates to see little kids dressed like slappers as it encourages the wrong sort of people.

I want to challenge her attitude as

(1) she CONSTANTLY refers to babies as sexy. Or, more specifically, "shhhexxxxy" «vom»

(2) surely the "wrong sort of person" is wrong regardless of what you dress you small child in?

I find "fuck off and don't talk shite" quite useful in these situations.

I think your point 2 is really succinct - I would just say that next time. Slippers is such a horrible word.

Although if by slappers she means tops with suggestive slogans and heels on toddlers they are a bit ick.

Calling babies sexy is also grim.

ChasedByBees · 07/07/2012 10:53

Hmm, I think Hath's answer is better Grin and slappers is a horrible word. I don't have any strong feelings about slippers.

GnocchiNineDoors · 07/07/2012 10:55

Yes, I agree that children in too adult a style of clothing is wrong but not in the way she means. My reasoning is it just isnt age appropriate, not that it turns thim into sexual objects

Hahah "aibu to challenge my sil for talking about slippers"

  1. 'Sexy' seems to have had all real meaning removed from it these days and all manner of things are described as sexy...even wallpaper on some DIY shows. I've heard mobiles described as 'sexy little phones'.

  2. Yes, so tell her that.

I don't really see why you need advice on how to 'challenge her'? Either ignore her or tell her what you said in point number 2.

HecateHarshPants · 07/07/2012 11:05

How about a nice bitchy "You mean the sort of person who refers to small children as "sexy"?"

GnocchiNineDoors · 07/07/2012 11:07

Well, it was a FB comment so I just put my second point.

According to her, the children are dressed like prostitutes.

I wanted to challenge the comment as it doesnt seem right to me that if a child is seen as attractive to a paedophile its the parents fault for.dressing them a certain way.

I detest people using the word 'sexy' in relation to small children. Although if I'm honest I don't know anyone in RL who does this because it's just frikkin' wrong on so many levels. But it pops up on here often enough that I know some people must use it Confused

carabos · 07/07/2012 13:21

How do you dress a small child like a prostitute? And how does a prostitute dress anyway? What is the matter with her? Is she obsessed with sex?

PastaLadyHasNameChangedForThis · 07/07/2012 13:35

God only knows. I assume she means a stereotypical prostitute look (hazards guess at red leather, fishnet and fuck me heels).

I seriously cant imagine anyone actually dresses their children like that.

GnocchiNineDoors · 07/07/2012 13:46

I wish FB had MN emoticons as

Confused would be the ideal response.

Agree with your point 2, although also agree that there is a line that some parents dont seem to mind leaping right over when it comed to the slogan tops, high heels on toddlers etc.

My DHs aunt is constantly referring to our DD as 'sexxxyyy', it makes me want to slap her it is just wrong. Luckily we don't see her much or I'd have run out of restraint by now.

NarkedRaspberry · 07/07/2012 13:58

'Slapper' is a vile term that, more often than not, is used to judge a woman/girl's behaviour by clothes they wear.

The clothes do not make a person anything no more than a lab coat and safety goggles would make Peter Andre a biochemist.

There's nothing wrong with woman being sexually aware and active. This is not the 19thC.

The availability of the children's clothes she dislikes is part of the wider cultural trend of treating younger and younger children as teenagers/mini adults. As is using words like 'sexy'.

The 'wrong sort of person' is going to be equally attracted by children in school uniform - they are sexually aroused by children, not by the clothes they wear.

Or, as Hath said, 'fuck off and don't talk shite.'

Cheriefroufrou · 07/07/2012 14:00

on point 2, she is right, a child dressed in a grown up style.. looks like a child dressed in a grown up style, they do not look like consenting adults!

language evolves all the time, and while I personally find calling a baby or a puppy or even a meal "sexy" a bit yucky, I do appreciate that its meaning is broader nowadays

Cheriefroufrou · 07/07/2012 14:01

no I read wrong, YOU are right on point 2

LilQueenie · 07/07/2012 14:54

FB does have MN style emoticons. at least it does on chrome when I use it x

WorraLiberty · 07/07/2012 14:56

It does in messages and chat but not on the news feed/walls.

WandaDoff · 07/07/2012 14:57

I find "fuck off and don't talk shite" quite useful in these situations.

^^^ That.
