To think jewellery made from rodent bones is not award-winning, but quite disgusting

Ok, maybe I really am out of touch with fashion completly now, maybe Im just to squeamish but really- jewellery made from dead rats bones and horse hair is winning awards?

It makes me feel a bit ill.

The artist said:

?I am concerned with finding beauty in - and making use of - death and discard,? she added. ?I feel the pieces are not a simple reminder of death, but an alteration of it, vitalising past life fragments.?

Sorry, but that just sounds so pretentious when Im just thinking she found some free stuff to make money off.

I suppose its just me though that doesnt get this?

Nothing wrong with it.

I think the materials she is using are pretty traditional, perhaps it's unusual to see the shapes of the bones in the finished product, but it doesn't freak me out.

I thought jewellery had been made from bones for thousands of years. It's done in a modern way but it's with traditional materials.

I like the idea of animals being killed and being used for food or other things.

I shoot rabbits and fish, but only for food, or bait. I think people have a skewed view of the food chain and our part in conservation/planet management.

Why bury the bones if people with wear them rather than plastic tat that is destroying the planet, or using 'higher' and endangered animals?

We have to cull rodents, lets make use of them.

Thanks for the link - that's a present for DW sorted out. She loves weird stuff like that. Her jewellery includes a mumified baby snake encased in resin and an emerald-green beetle also in resin.

Tokamark

Thanks for that, now I feel even more sick!

Ok its just me then. Im far too squeamish.

I think the artist is referencing ancient art, partic nomadic cultures; objects d'art are diminutive out of neccessity

I don't know if it's the same woman, but there's a designer who makes shoes and hats from dead birds [boke] just typing that gave me the willies!

justsofedup · 06/07/2012 14:36

Craic that sounds equally as horrific!
