AIBU or does it actually work? And if so what is it meant to do. I've just had some and I feel much the same!

Doesn't work for everyone. Some people have had fantastic experiences but it didn't work for me either

drivingmisspotty · 06/07/2012 12:09

I am really skeptical about 'alternative medicine' but have found that acupuncture works for me. DP is a physio and has trained to give acupuncture and uses it for pain relief within NHS.

He has used it on my shoulders/neck where I get tightness - he puts the needle right into the knot, which feels like when you get a massage but more intense - I like it! I have also felt pleasantly sleepy after acupuncture - DP tells me it is meant to work on your hormones. He also used it when I was pregnant to turn DS and encourage labour. DS did turn and came along shortly after due date but have no idea if this was to do with acupuncture!

Birdsgottafly · 06/07/2012 12:16

Acupunture is now considered to be complimentary, rather than alternative medicine, because there is enough evidence to show that it is beneficial for some health issues, as massage etc is.

I have had it, via the NHS, perscribed by a consultant,i have also had it via a Chinese therapist and i wil say that the latter got better results.

It depends what it is for, whether you feelit straight away.

It worked very well for me. I have a form of arthritis and when my shoulder was bad, I tried acupuncture on the NHS. Great relief and it lasted for weeks.

HTH.

valiumredhead · 06/07/2012 12:33

Yes fantastic for me, I got it on the NHS.

cheekybarsteward · 06/07/2012 12:35

I had complimentry accupuncture...it said I had nice eyes! Wink

seeker · 06/07/2012 12:38

There is some evidence that acupuncture can temporarily relieve pain. But none at all that it can do anything else at all.

Birdsgottafly · 06/07/2012 12:43

Acupunture has been proven to be good for many conditions/symptoms by scientific research methods used in medical research.

seeker · 06/07/2012 12:51

Is there? Is that something new? My understanding is that qs the "blinding" of trials becomes more effective, the number of conditions that acupuncture can be shown to be effective for has diminished massively, and the only area left in an question was pain relief.

PenguinFeet1 · 06/07/2012 12:57

Worked really well for me in terms of fertility. Had crazy cycles 50 + days, ttc for over 2 years. 4 weeks of acupuncture was enough to regulate cycle down to 32 days. After 6 weeks I found out I was pregnant! Also finding it helpful during pregnancy to relieve headaches and hip pain.

valiumredhead · 06/07/2012 13:19

penguin where my sister lives in the USA if you have fertility treatment you automatically have acupuncture as the success rate is so much higher.

sensuallettuce · 06/07/2012 15:56

Swear by it once a month for back pain and stress levels - felt pissed the first few times :)

FoxyRevenger · 06/07/2012 16:00

It worked for me. I had a course of treatment (privately, not NHS) 4 years ago and the problem has never returned since.

It didn't work at all for my husband when he tried it though.

I think some people must be more susceptible than others.

DreamingofSummer · 06/07/2012 16:13

total bollocks - I tried it with my physio. It had no effect whatsoever

Sittinginthesun · 06/07/2012 16:16

Worked for me. My GP was amazed by the results.

ChameleonCircuit · 06/07/2012 16:19

After three miscarriages I asked my DH's acupuncturist for help. Within a month I was pregnant with DS. (and no, it wasn't THAT kind of help!) Grin

He's also helped my Mum and several friends with various complaints.

seeker · 06/07/2012 16:30

"I think some people must be more susceptible than others." or they have things that gets better on their own!

FreudianSlipper · 06/07/2012 16:49

i have an underactive thyroid (only slightly) since having a course i have more energy, lost some weight and just feel better i no longer have that horrible heavy constantly tired fuzzy feeling

it is the only thing that helped with my mums stomach ulcers she used to suffer terribly and get an attack every few months now it is very rare and when she feels it coming on she has a few top up treatments

i know quite a few people who have it it for a number of different reasons and most with positive results

FreudianSlipper · 06/07/2012 16:51

and heart palpitations have gone and so have the puffy eyes and water retention

DuelingFanjo · 06/07/2012 16:55

I am a massive sceptic but had it when I was going through IVF. No idea if it helped my infertility (I did get pregnant and have a baby) but it did make me a lot calmer and after a few sessions I really did feel the benefit even if it was just from lying in a quiet room for an hour.

I did feel a bit disappointed after the first session though.

crashdoll · 06/07/2012 16:56

In my desperation, I spent hundreds on acupunture. The acupuncturist kept telling me it takes time. To be fair, he did say that he couldn't cure me but help relieve my symptoms. In the first session, he stuck a needle in my swollen wrist and the swelling disappeared within hours. It returned which leads me to think the swelling would have eased up anyway. Nothing else he did made any difference except make my pockets lighter.

Sittinginthesun · 06/07/2012 17:39

My acupuncturist did tell me that some people react better than others. The first session I had - I actually felt drugged. My tongue felt swollen and my limbs were really heavy.

I had a hormone imbalance for at least ten years, with mild POS, and was about to start treatment (was tested on several occasions by GP). Persuaded GP to give me six months to try acupuncture - after four months I felt completely different. After six months, I fell pregnant (had been told it simply wouldn't happen as I wasn't ovulating).

I had a couple more sessions after DS1 was born, and have been fine since.

seeker · 06/07/2012 21:50

"My acupuncturist did tell me that some people react better than others"

Practically all alternative therapists say this. That way it's the patient's fault if it doesn't work!

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/07/2012 21:52

I had it for tennis elbow. The pain and inflammation went away but who knows if it was getting better by then. I don't believe any of the others are even slightly effective (homoeopathy, my arse). Acupuncture, maybe.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 06/07/2012 21:53

I find the theory hard to swallow but I do believe it worked for me.

I had acupuncture during fertility treatment and it worked first time. My DH said I was less stressy.
