To think it was a bit mean to charge DD for this?

Some of you might have seen my lost dog thread in the doghouse. My poor DD's are devastated that their dog is missing and we've been ringing everyone, posting on every pet site we can find and hanging up flyers everywhere. It's been a rough week for all of us. Overall, people have been really helpful and supportive and taken flyers and offered to keep an eye out for him. (Apart from the bugger who has him, obviously!).

Anyway, my 4 year old DD gave a flyer to one of the local shop keepers after we stopped in to buy milk, and she said "Oh, how awful, you must be so worried... That'll be 50p, please"

I paid it, of course, but I was taken aback that she even thought of charging us to post it. None of the other local businesses wanted payment for putting flyers up and even the newspapers didn't charge us for advertising space. I know it's a nothing amount, but I was surprised that her first thought seemed to be "hmm, I can profit from your misfortune", especially when the person asking was a 4 year old with a missing dog. AIBU, or was that just a teensy bit grasping?

(His lost dog page is here if you're willing to share it on facebook or twitter. Do let me know if you'll be charging for the service, though, as I may need to sort out a second mortgage!)

Have posted the link on FB, although I only have mners on my friends list, every bit helps.

teanosugar · 06/07/2012 09:28

Our local One Stop Shop also charge for notices on the board - £1 for three weeks.

Hopeforever · 06/07/2012 09:35

Rather than think that shop keeper is mean how about being thankful that every other place didn't charge you?

He is running a business so YABU

Sad that you have lost your dog, pray you get good news soon

LRDtheFeministDragon · 06/07/2012 09:36

I would think she's just so used to getting payment for posting notices it didn't occur to her not to ask.

I hope you find the dog soon. Sad

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 06/07/2012 09:37

Sorry your god is missing, hope you find him soon.

However, YABU about the flyer - most shops charge for flyers be it a lost animal or a gardening business. It's his livlihood, if he lets you have it for free, he'll have to let Jo Bloggs as well.........

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 06/07/2012 09:37

dog, not god - sorry! Blush

I have just posted this on my cousins fb wall. She is a vet in Norfolk and the whole family are huge animal lovers so will definitely do their best to find him!

I pray little Goya finds his way home safely xx good luck with your search and please update us when you find him xx

fuzzypicklehead · 06/07/2012 09:49

I am grateful that all the others didn't charge us! To be honest, if they had all charged us I wouldn't have thought anything of it--it was just the fact that only one did that made it seem mean by contrast. Does that make sense?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 06/07/2012 09:58

But she didn't know no-one else charged you.

Btw, I just noticed your DD is 4 ... how was she 'charging' your DD, not you?! Surely you were with her and surely at 4 she doesn't earn her own 50pences ...I think it's very unlikely the shop owner thought of it as charging your DD, but rather simply asking an adult for the usual price.

fuzzypicklehead · 06/07/2012 10:09

I guess she did see it that way. It was DD who gave her the flyer and she was addressing her comments toward her, but yes I was the one who paid. And you're right, she didn't know that no one else had charged us.

Sorry your god is missing, hope you find him soon.

Sorry but I can't see through the tears of laughter! Grin Grin

OP, I don't think it was particularly mean.

The shops here charge £1 per week for putting a small postcard in their windows...some don't even allow flyers because they take up too much advertising space.

They are running a business after all and you were very lucky the others didn't charge you.

So sorry about your dog...hope you find it soon Sad

Vixxen · 06/07/2012 11:29

I am from south Norfolk, have put the word out on my Facebook and asked anyone in Norwich and surrounding to spread the word!

I really hope the little pup is found soon.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 06/07/2012 11:33

Shops often ask for payment for notices to go up because people advertise gardening/cleaning/ironing/babysitting services there, as well as trying to sell thing.

I don't think she was being mean, she wasnt actually charging your 4yo, she was charging you.

fuzzypicklehead · 06/07/2012 15:01

Ok, I can accept that IABU to object to being charged to post a flyer, especially if they charge other people to do so. I'm sure I'm overly sensitive, especially about the DDs because it's been so tough on them.
