if you can.

Some of us might be too old, fat and knackered to be registered to donate bone marrow but people undergoing cancer treatments also need an awful lot of blood.

So if you can, please have a look at blood.org and give blood.

It. Is something so easy snd simple that most of us can do to help.

Thanks.

Been today, in memory of my late DDad, who died three years ago today, remembering how much his transfusion perked him up when he was run down and knackered from chemo. Hope I can do the same for someone else.

hoops997 · 06/07/2012 16:57

I give it, am on donation number 22, would also advise people to book an appointment, I give 3 times a year Smile it only takes 30 minutes and you could save someone's life Smile

sensuallettuce · 06/07/2012 17:02

ladybeagleeyes sorry treatment didn't work :(. Will you try again?

I may have contracted Hep C from a blood transfusion in 1990 - it still saved my life though.

justtryingtodomybest · 06/07/2012 17:08

I used to give blood regularly - I also donated platelets and I'm on the bone marrow register.
Unfortunately I've been diagnosed as anaemic which means I can't donate just now. But I will go back as soon as I can - and would urge everyone else who can to do it too.

It doesn't take long, it really doesn't hurt and you get a guilt free biscuit afterwards!

AMumInScotland · 06/07/2012 20:02

Just bumping this up for the evening crowd Smile

Cuddler · 06/07/2012 20:04

I will, and should as i am rh - but i have been continually pregnant or breastfeeding for the past 5 years and probably will be for at least another 5!

ContinentalKat · 06/07/2012 20:30

I donated for the 6th time yesterday.
Really quick and virtually painless, plus you feel really good about yourself afterwards.

My dad survived a horrible car accident thanks to donated blood, and if anything ever happens to my dcs I want blood to be readily available for them!

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 06/07/2012 20:35

In next due in October appointment already booked Smile

It really is easy. Also on the bone marrow register.

Hobs · 06/07/2012 20:39

Can you not donate at all, ever after a blood transfusion? I was told by someone that you could after a certain amount of time had elapsed?

I had a massive transfusion when DS was born a year ago. If it weren't for people giving blood donations I would not be here now, so a huge thanks Thanks goes out to everyone who does donate

BuntyCollocks · 06/07/2012 20:41

I would if I could, but I have been turned away every time as only a phlebotomist can make me bleed.

It took more than a dozen attempts to site my cannula when in labour :( it ended up on the underside of my wrist.

My DH AND DFIL are prolific donators, though, and I encourage anyone who can to do so.

LadyBeagleEyes · 06/07/2012 20:51

Sensual, i had a misspent youth and probably caught it from a shared neeedle.
Apparently after my course, there's no other treatment but there are many in the pipeline.
Thanks for being brave enough for admitting it on here though, I'm sure there's some of us that have Hep C and won't admit it.
I wouldn't have if you hadn't mentioned it.

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 06/07/2012 20:51

Oh and I'm still bf dd and have been for two years and not been rejected.

Vix07 · 06/07/2012 20:51

Just booked for me & DP - his first time, bless! I used to do it regularly but changed jobs and got out of the habit, pathetic really. They do it in my village hall quite frequently so no excuses not to keep going!

Thanks for the reminder :)

vodkaandcaviar · 06/07/2012 20:56

I wish I could get over my needle phobia and give blood but I've never even had a blood test, let alone donated. Even the thought fills me with terror and makes me want to cry/puke/faint all at once. It makes me feel really selfish but I think I could only do it if a relative desperately needed it.

coffeeandcream · 06/07/2012 21:34

I was a regular donor until getting pregnant, plus I'm on the bone marrow registry. Will go back to donating as soon as I'm allowed after the birth.

PatFenis · 06/07/2012 21:41

I donated for the first time on June 22nd this year - I had put it off and put it off but once I booked the appointment (prompted by posters here) I felt there was no going back and I can honestly say that I don't know why I fussed about it for so long, it was absolutely fine!

I am booked in for November for my next donation :)

donnie · 06/07/2012 21:47

I am a blood donor; I find it pretty awful because my veins are deep plus I have low blood pressure and an unusually slow resting pulse, but I do it anyway. I feel like shite for about a week afterwards but I figure once every three months is worth the discomfort.

They are appealing for more donors to cope with the influx of people around the Olympics period, especially of you are type O Rhesus Neg, which is the one blood type which can be given to anyone. The main reason I give blood is because I am O RH Neg myself.

My neighbour nearly died after she had her lovely now almost two year old because she haemmorhaged (sp) so much. She needed two transfusions....makes you think......

somewheresomehow · 06/07/2012 21:56

i can and i do my last donation was my 65th and still going strong :)

LucieMay · 06/07/2012 22:00

I get tattooed and pierced too frequently to give blood unfortunately!

smileyhappymummy · 06/07/2012 22:08

I'm another one who can't donate blood following a life saving transfusion- so thank you to everyone who does donate!
Even though having a transfusion means you can't ever give blood again currently you can still sign up to be a bone marrow donor. I was really pleased to discover this as had really wanted to give something back.

sensuallettuce · 06/07/2012 22:10

Can you donate bone marrow if you have got rid of hep C?!

LadyBeagleEyes · 06/07/2012 22:18

I would doubt it very much, sensual.

NoComet · 06/07/2012 22:18

Feeling guilty, used to as a student and have occasionally since, but just don't remember.
Haven't seem a poster for ages, they just don't advertise at all round here.

kissmyheathenass · 06/07/2012 22:22

Inspired by Aillidh's battle, I booked an appointment to give blood. Its on Monday. I will also put my name on the bone marrow register while I am there.

sensuallettuce · 06/07/2012 22:23
