To not buy DH a replica helmet

Long story.... For the past 3 years I've basically been supporting the family and had to go back to work full time before DS2 turned 2 to a job I hated (not that I'm bitter). DH's work basically dried up & he had to find a new career. He has now just been hired & we are delighted. Roll on a couple of weeks ago & I ask if we should just leave the anniversary cards (we have been married over 10 years) & just spend the money on a bottle of wine. He agrees. Day comes & he gives me a card (the shame) & a bottle of wine (yhey!). I buy a nice dinner for us & say I will get him the bag he was looking at for work. Next day he says he'd rather have a replica helmet at over 100 euro instead.
I made non comittal noises.
Basically I am exhausted, sad I never get to pick my kids up after school & fed up. A bag was 'useful' a replica helmet?

So be bought you a card and wine, you bought a nice dinner... couldn't it have been called quits then? Why did you have to offer an extra gift?

ThisIsAUsername · 05/07/2012 21:46

*he

Guilt I think over the lack of card!

A card isn't equivalent to a bag let alone a helmet. If you spend 100euros as birthdays/christmas then maybe that's the time for that sort of gift.

LimeLeafLizard · 05/07/2012 21:58

What sort of helmet? Roman soldier? Darth Vader?

Not that it makes any difference, YANBU. Sounds like you don't have masses of spare cash atm and this would just be a frivolous waste.

Dozer · 05/07/2012 21:59

Sounds like you resent having had to be the sole breadwinner for 3 years?

PuffPants · 05/07/2012 21:59

What's a replica helmet? Confused

DingbatsFur · 05/07/2012 22:05

It is a replica templar helmet apparently!

I'm guessing it's maybe like a replica Formula 1 helmet, I know McLaren sell some on their website ranging from £80 to £4k.

Teeb · 05/07/2012 22:06

Is he hoping to wear it around the house op?Smile

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/07/2012 22:09

Tell him the Knights Templar were good with money Grin that's what got them the shop in the end.

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/07/2012 22:09

*chop not shop...

Twinkleinmyeye · 05/07/2012 22:14

My DS1 bought himself one from a castle down Pembrokeshire for £11.95, if that helps.

Oh, he's 2.7 yo but he does look gorgeous running around being a knight!

LimeLeafLizard · 05/07/2012 22:16

Grin at thought of OP's H wanting to wear his Templar helmet around the house!

My 4 year old likes dressing up as a knight - helmet cost about £2. Tell DH (nicely) to grow up?!

maras2 · 05/07/2012 22:17

Replica of what type of helmet? He sounds very ungrateful and a bit bonkers. So in the time old Mumsnet refrain < Leave The Bastard > :)

QuickLookBusy · 05/07/2012 22:20

You agreed not to buy cards for each other, he decided he wanted to, you don't owe him anything.

Sassyfrassy · 05/07/2012 22:52

Tell him to wait until autumn when the reenactment markets are on so he can shop around properly.
