AIBU to think that describing my dd as 'boisterous and engaging' on her report is a bit.contradictory, lol!?!? Like saying shes a pain in the ass, but endearing with it? Bless her stroppy socks.

As a parent, I think I'd find it amusing - if correct. If I had written that, as a teacher, it would imply that I was fond of the child and liked them a lot, but alluding to the fact that they did my head in a lot of the time!!

Haha! Mine always said lots of nice things with an added 'she's a bit of a bossy boots'...

Your DD sounds fab!

DrSeuss · 05/07/2012 19:42

The two are not necessarily contradictory. Engaging suggests that the teacher really likes her but that sometimes she is a bit bouncy.

Mrsjay · 05/07/2012 19:59

she sounds a lot of fun maybe even a little bit naughty Grin she really will go far at school with that nature DD1 got similar reports but it was Miss jay is chatty and VERY social Grin

scummymummy · 05/07/2012 20:03

boisterous and engaging sounds lovely. A bouncy friendly kid.:)

lowfatiscrap12 · 05/07/2012 20:23

oh yes, she's certainly both of those things. I lolled when I read it; sounds like the teacher really knows her!

If the teacher had said boisterous but engaging, there'd have been a teeny bit of a critical element. The and makes it quite different.

Your DD sounds lovely.

DozyDuck · 05/07/2012 21:48

My DSs report starts with 'despite'

It's a lovely report, but the first word made me chuckle.

KittyFane1 · 05/07/2012 22:19

Yes!
'Engaging' as in takes part in everything, good level of interest. 'Boisterous' as in behaviour can be a bit Hmm!!

blackcurrants · 05/07/2012 22:27

I think that's a great report - suggests that the teacher knows and likes your DD - pretty good stuff! :)

DSis is a primary school teacher and says that because of how parents complain about any report that says anything even faintly uncomplimentary about their precious Algernon, the report (in her school) has become pretty useless. She says things like "lovely smile" when she can't say "nice personality" because she's not allowed to write "little Algernon needs to learn to bloody share"!

123caughtaflea · 05/07/2012 22:54

I proof read a colleague's reports the other day.

One described the child both as "defiant" and "a pleasure to teach".

Now, I know the child and both descriptions are true, but together they sound bonkers! I did suggest a better phrasing (won't post it just in case it outs me once reports go out!)

lowfatiscrap12 · 05/07/2012 23:12

lol, how can you be defiant and a pleasure to teach? The mind boggles!

OP posts:
DrSeuss · 06/07/2012 18:59

Most Mumsnetters are both defiant and fab! I'm fantastic and I will head butt anyone who disagrees.

lovebunny · 06/07/2012 19:35

i wrote a report this year about a child who talks far too much, interrupts, but makes good points and is very likeable. she's a pain in the bum sometimes but worth persevering with because she has so much to offer.

girlpancake · 06/07/2012 21:10

I do think sometimes reports should come with a translation service. My MIL(former primary school teacher) said there were so many things they weren't allowed to say the whole thing became a bit ridiculous.

Loshad · 06/07/2012 21:14

DS4's report (age 11) this week described his writing as technically very correct but lacking any creative flair Shock Grin

DrSeuss · 08/07/2012 17:57

As a teacher, I have to use stock phrases and must strive to be positive. As a parent, I want the report personalised with positives of course but negatives spelled out clearly. I include in this "is currently being a Pain in the Arse" if that is what Ds is!
