To think this is discrimination?

I seems every job advert I look at just now is requesting you send a picture with your C.V and if you don't you wont be considered.

Surely this is discrimination as they will just choose who they think looks best?

I am also seeing lots of adverts saying they are looking for people who are "good looking" etc.

No wonder it's so hard to find a job and now I'm telling myself I am still unemployed because the employer thinks I am not pretty enough and fat. :( I'm actually getting quite upset thinking about it.

Employer come across as a right sleaze. Wouldn't want to work for him. 'please send me a photo of yourself I. A bikini so I can perve over it'

Yuck!

SchrodingersMew · 05/07/2012 09:12

It's really annoying though and I hate sending strangers pictures. Angry

I just want a job, I didn't realise I would have to be a supermodel to get one. Hmm

Pretty Perhaps I should send a bikini picture with my post baby jelly belly and stretch marks, think I could sue him if he replies telling me I am too fat? :o

FolkGirl But gaining qualifications is achievable, suddenly being good looking isn't.

I think the person that owns that bar is a very inexperienced or crap business owner. Hopefully they'll learn!

TroublesomeEx · 05/07/2012 09:15

But that particular type of bar wants to employ a particular type of person and to attract a particular type of customer.

Are those the only bar jobs being advertised (assuming it's specifically bar work you're looking for)?

I can't say I come across either that type of bar or the sort of person who'd want to work/drink in one.

Perhaps you need to look at different jobs?

SchrodingersMew · 05/07/2012 09:17

Those aren't the only jobs and I'm pretty much willing to do any job I can. Even when you get past the likes of that shit they pretty much all ask for a picture, which makes me uneasy.

TroublesomeEx · 05/07/2012 09:17

OP, gaining qualifications at that level isn't achievable to everybody Hmm.

Not everyone is capable of achieving a degree or post grad qualification.

That's just a silly thing to say!

SchrodingersMew · 05/07/2012 09:18

I'm sorry, I didn't specifically mean that level but for most people gaining some form of qualification is.

Sorry I didn't really think there.

we do need mainly females for the theme although we will still employ male members

Eh?

Hyperballad · 05/07/2012 09:19

Schroding, I don't think you could sue for that no because there isn't an act protecting fat people within the work place.

Spuddybean · 05/07/2012 09:19

I doubt it is a face to the name thing; usually agencies and HR depts ask for you to bring your passport into interview to prove right to work. They then photocopy it and attach it to the cv/application/interview notes.

When working in recruitment we purposely asked people to remove the photo and DOB from cv's. Especially common if the employee was foreign as in a lot of countries it is standard, but not over here.

I would give anyone who requested one a wide berth.

SchrodingersMew · 05/07/2012 09:20

Shock You mean an employer can refuse you on the grounds of being fat and it's okay?!

OP posts:
PrettyPrinceofParties · 05/07/2012 09:21

Send him this

TroublesomeEx · 05/07/2012 09:22

Tbh, it sounds like a pretty crappy place to work anyway!

What other jobs are you looking for?

SchrodingersMew · 05/07/2012 09:22

SpuddyBean But here it's getting really hard to find jobs that aren't requesting pictures, I have applied to as many as I can find and still no luck, if I cut out the ones asking for pictures there wont be much less and I really will have no chance.

TroublesomeEx · 05/07/2012 09:22

Do you have qualifications? Are there any qualifications you could get to put you in a better position so that you aren't looking at sleazy jobs with sleazy bosses?

FioFio · 05/07/2012 09:24

yy I found when applying for bar work they wanted to see me. It put me off tbh. One was for a really nice pub/restaurant and even they were the same.

SchrodingersMew · 05/07/2012 09:24

Pretty :o I have saved it! I shall be sending that. :)

FolkGirl Bar, waiting, wine waiting, till service, retail, office, hairdressers, event staff and a load more.

TroublesomeEx · 05/07/2012 09:24

Unfortunately, an employer can refuse you on any grounds they like, they just have to make sure that they don't give certain reasons as an explanation.

HecateHarshPants · 05/07/2012 09:24

Yep. Doesn't suprise me.

Although, tbh, the only thing it's changing is them binning people they don't like the look of at the application stage and not after interview.

Anyone who says there is not fat/ugly discrimination in employment is clearly neither Grin

Do you like my big bunch of sour grapes, eh? mmmmm. Wink

SchrodingersMew · 05/07/2012 09:25

FolkGirl I only have some modules from college, no standard grades due to absence from undiagnosed disability. :(

I am applying for college just now as well.

OP posts:
SchrodingersMew · 05/07/2012 09:27

Hecate At least at the interview stage there might be the opportunity to talk them round. :o

Westcountrylovescheese · 05/07/2012 09:27

Surely all recruitment is discrimination. You are discriminating against one candidate to employ the other. Discrimination is a type of selection... what you mean is illegal discrimination. There is nothing inherently illegal about discriminating against ugly people but there could be indirect age/disability discrimination in there so might be in a grey area. One of the reasons anti-ginger sentiment can never really be challenged (although there is an argument that this is race related)...

Oddly the advert asking for predominantly women to suit the theme is less contentious than some of the others as its justifiable... in the same way a Chinese restaurant can employ predominantly Chinese staff.

FioFio · 05/07/2012 09:27

It's worth bearing in mind that if you are looking for part time retail work there will be a lot of jobs becoming available in the next few months due to staff leaving to go to university. Infact if I was you I would take your cv and a covering letter and call on some companies and ask them if they have work. This is what I did and I got an interview and then a job for a job that wasn't even available. It takes alot of guts and can be quite soul destroying but it's worth it if you are desperate for work
