AIBU to cut my nose of to site my face a little and be a little awkward re travelling to work

Shinyshoes1 · 04/07/2012 14:25

I used to use my car to travel to work and used to claim expenses back until I was told by my area manager that I wasn't allowed to do this anymore as managers were complaining. Something about the distance travelling from my home exceeding the distance to my base shop blah blah blah.

Anyway, I got in tough with HR and they confirmed what I thought, I could claim expenses etc. My Area manager then produces an email from the guy at Head Office in Charge of Travel that the travel to work can't exceed travel from home etc blah blah blah.

Long and short of it, I relented, thought that the email from the Travel bloke at Head Office trumped my letter from HR and no more was said and I stopped claiming travel

I bought an Oyster top it up and use that to get to work as the travel and parking were killing me.

The buses are strike tomorrow,

Now I've been told that I drive and could drive in. NOW HOLD ON ONE MINUTE. I can't afford the travel and parking, so no I won't be using my car, we confirmed that, so AIBU to say the buses are on strike I can't get to work, so unless they provide a cab (which they did to the other staff that this happened to re the strike last week) then I won't be coming in.

I know i might be a teeny Unreasonable but I can't afford the parking and why should I use my car when it suits the company

Yabu. When there are strikes you get into work anyway you can.

FutTheShuckUp · 04/07/2012 14:28

Drive to work. Many of us in the world dont get parking/travel expenses.

Trills · 04/07/2012 14:28

Y would BU not to expect to make a special effort to get to work when there is a bus strike.

Everyone else will also be doing something that costs more or is less convenient as well.

(if it was cheaper and/or more convenient then they'd always go that way and never catch the bus)

FutTheShuckUp · 04/07/2012 14:29

Or dont drive to work but dont be surprised when the time comes to make redundancies you get a letter in a brown envelope..

complexnumber · 04/07/2012 14:31

cut my nose to site my face

Yes, that should do the trick. I have never had any trouble siting my face after a nasty cut to the nose. :)

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 04/07/2012 14:33

YABVU and very silly.

You have a job to go to and it's your responsibility to get yourself there. It's not your company's fault the busses are on strike.

Would you be happy if there were no doctors or firefighters or police available just because there is a bus strike? No? Then do you job and stop whining.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 04/07/2012 14:35

YABU!!!!!!! How come you get paid expenses to drive to work, or you did get paid expenses....how come I dont get my expenses paid then?

Sounds like you were getting a good perk but its finished now!!

How would you feel if you didnt go in and they docked your pay for a day?

Just stop being such hard work and drive in, how far away are you anyway?

Spuddybean · 04/07/2012 14:37

It depends on your HR policy. But unless there is some kind of exemption I would expect all staff to fund their own travel to work (my DP's travel is £600 per month!). It often costs more & takes longer on strike days, but that is kind of the point of them. To cause disruption.

Sometimes the cost of a taxi/travel to work on a strike day is more than you will earn on that particular day, but as it is a one off you would be expected to go in still. (When i was on crutches for a week i was expected to go in and i got a taxi, and it was a loss - so i think that attitude is pretty normal).

SimplySoo · 04/07/2012 14:38

Last time there was a bus strike, most buses were still running.

Anyway, 5 July bus strike had been called off now: www.standard.co.uk/news/transport/london-bus-strike-suspended-after-tfl-offers-unprecedented-profitsharing-deal-7911986.html

RuleBritannia · 04/07/2012 14:39

Get a job nearer home.

Aworryingtrend · 04/07/2012 14:39

YABU- how many people get paid to travel to work?! Join the real world.

Shinyshoes1 · 04/07/2012 14:40

I'm about 4 miles from my place of work but it's not just the travel it's paying for parking too . I know ibu but yes I did have a perk , yes it's been taken away and no I can't afford to take my car without the perk . It seems a bit of "when it suits "

EasilyBored · 04/07/2012 14:42

I don't understand how you can claim your travel to and from work anyway. If I have to go anywhere else for work (to a meeting in a different location for example) then I claim the mileage from my office to the meeting, even if I left straight from home. It is not the responsibility of your employer to get you to and from your ordinary place of work. So tough, YABU.

Aworryingtrend · 04/07/2012 14:45

It seems a bit of "when it suits "

That's life! Its up to your employer if and when they choose to remove (a very major) perk of the job. We used to have a fruit basket at work and tea and coffee provided for us. We don't any more. C'est la vie.

If you genuinely cannot afford the travel to work and back then perhaps you ought to look for another job. i suspect however that this is not the case ad you are just being difficult as you were used to haveing it paid for you.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 04/07/2012 14:45

4 miles.....how about getting a bike and cycling in?? Just get used to travelling on public transport when the strikes arent on, 4 miles isnt very far at all.

I work 6 miles away, my boss doesnt care how I get to work, just as long as I do!!! In this economic climate there are millions of people wanting my job if I make their life hard!

Eve · 04/07/2012 14:45

Did you declare your perk and travel expenses to the inland revenue?

There are pretty strict rules about what constitutes expense based travel for work purposes?

PenisVanLesbian · 04/07/2012 14:46

4 miles? get a bicycle!

ObiWan · 04/07/2012 14:49

4 miles? Grin I think they might reasonably expect you to walk.

Do you mean in your OP your employers actually paid for your travel to work?

Whitershadeofpale · 04/07/2012 14:51

Am I reading the OP wrong or was the reason this perk got taken away because you abused it and was claiming for mileage exceeding your distance from work?

I think you really need to suck it up and except that you were lucky to get away with claiming expenses for so long, especially if you were abusing them , and now it's time to put yourself out.

Whitershadeofpale · 04/07/2012 14:52

accept

fruitysummer · 04/07/2012 14:52

You'dbe using your car to suit yourself. It's not for the companies benefit.

They won't actually care how you get there as long as you get there.

You do not have to use your car, but you do have to try and get there by any means you can.

If it's a massive hassle, ask for the day off.

ajandjjmum · 04/07/2012 14:54

I was just wondering that Eve - even people with company vehicles have to either pay for their private fuel, or pay the tax in lieu. And your journy to work is you responsibility, not your employers.

Icelollycraving · 04/07/2012 14:56

4 miles?! Walk if you can't afford to park.

Shinyshoes1 · 04/07/2012 14:56

Ok not as bad a flaming as i thought . Grin I'll drive in and "suck it up "
