to ask what your maternity pay benefit/scheme is?

My contract states I get
6 weeks at 90% of my salary
after that SMP
:(

which means basically I can only stay off for about 8 weeks, we can't afford to manage it otherwise.
I would like to find out what other people are getting, so I can put it in a reasonable request at work to see if I can get a little more.

Thank you!

Same as you. And it has been at every company I've worked for.

Blueoctopus · 04/07/2012 11:29

Mine was 6 weeks at 90% then 12 weeks at half pay then 18 weeks at SMP.
That was before it changed to 9 months SMP instead of 6. I also had to pay back the 12 weeks at half pay as I decided not to go back.

Cathycomehome · 04/07/2012 11:29

Hi, I'm on leave now - Four weeks full pay, two at ninety percent, then twelve weeks at 50 per cent pay.

Blueoctopus · 04/07/2012 11:30

I was a teacher though so worked for the council so might be more generous than private sector.

Memoo · 04/07/2012 11:30

Mine was the same as yours.

fatmummy35 · 04/07/2012 11:31

Thats the normal maternity policy for most companies.

I saved a bit out of every salary for the 9 months I was pregnant allowing me for stay off for nearly a year.

Quenelle · 04/07/2012 11:31

I had 6 weeks at 90%, 4 weeks at 75% then SMP. My lovely boss negotiated the enhancement for me.

MurderOfProse · 04/07/2012 11:32

A lot depends on the norms for the industry you're in. The industry I started out in was all the statutory - i.e. 6 weeks at 90%, then SMP. Interestingly businesses can claim ALL of that back.

Then I moved to a different industry and it was a lot better. A month for every year of service on full pay, plus one month. Then SMP for the rest. This was normal for other similar companies in that industry.

LadyKooKoo · 04/07/2012 11:32

I received 12 weeks full pay and then 40 weeks SMP. If I went back to work before the 52 weeks was up (whether that be 1 week or 10 weeks) I received a return to work bonus after 3 months which was the equivalent of 6 weeks salary. I know I am pretty lucky with this package but I work for a huge global company so they can afford to be more generous.

What you are receiving is what you are entitled to by law. Your company has no obligation to give you anything more so I think your best option would be to save up your holiday and tag that on to your maternity leave as it will give you another 4 or 5 weeks off.

TheUnsinkableTitanic · 04/07/2012 11:34

thats about normal for private industry
you will find you are getting tax back each month which will bump up your monthly pay but tis shit

i am self employed, so don't even get the 6 weeks at 90%

hence i worked on the morning that i delivered youngest DC and was back working p/t within 3 weeks (although answered emails most days, so technically never off)

youngest is now 2 and i don't remember her as baby which is really sad

very lucky that the nature of what i can do i can work strange hours so was always with her or DH was, but i was sleep deprived :)

melliebobs · 04/07/2012 11:35

I work for the NHS I get

2 months full pay
4 month 50% pay & SMP
3 month SMP

melliebobs · 04/07/2012 11:36

Also I can spread the payments out. So I've opted to spread out over the full leave that way I don't get the shock in my last 3 months of just SMP

apachepony · 04/07/2012 11:38

I get 6 months full pay, 6 months unpaid. Not in uk, didn't realise how rare that would be in the uk!

BikeRunSki · 04/07/2012 11:39

Your deal is pretty normal OP.

I get 18 weeks full pay, 21 weeks SMP. I am also going to take 13 weeks unpaid ML, then a year's worth of annual eave and seven KIT days.

Spuddybean · 04/07/2012 11:41

I work in HR and that's pretty standard. Are you in a big private company? Public sector is usually more generous.

I left on Friday and i am 1 week shy of entitlement to anything. So i am just getting SMP from the government.

If that is standard in your industry you may look bad asking for more. If that's all they offer anyone they would not want to set a precedent by giving you more.

ivanapoo · 04/07/2012 11:41

Same as yours here too. I work in a sizeable private sector company. I am saving as much as poss now each month and going to ask to do some staying in touch days too which will be paid. But they might not be relevant for every job.

We also will try to do a mortgage holiday for a few months. Obviously not really an option if you rent.

Remember you accrue holiday while you're off too which will get you a bit of time.

And you get child allowance which is £80 a month. Would you be eligible for any other benefits?

I'm hoping to take 10/11 months off (one as holiday accrued). It will be v tight and could prob only do it with first child... It is a bit depressing. I am currently main wage earner.

HMTheQueen · 04/07/2012 11:43

My company give 6 months full pay then SMP for 3 months. I missed out on it by two weeks (not worked there long enough Sad ).

I got standard - like you.

tyler80 · 04/07/2012 11:44

6 weeks @ 90%, 12 weeks at 50%+smp if returning, remainder just smp

(public sector)

Waspie · 04/07/2012 11:45

I got 90% for 6 weeks then 45% for 12 weeks, then SMP.

I used my annual leave to stop my maternity leave earlier and use the annual leave instead. I also saved frantically whilst pregnant and used these savings to bolster my pay after it dropped.

CharltonHairstyle · 04/07/2012 11:47

Same as you - we sold my our 2nd car and paid off debts so I could have longer on maternity.

Works out about £600 with CB.

MrsMangoBiscuit · 04/07/2012 11:48

-8 weeks full pay (less SMP, so I get full pay, but part of it is made up of SMP)
-then 18 weeks at 50% plus SMP , up to amount of full pay
-then 13 weeks of SMP
-then 13 weeks of unpaid leave.

I can take up to a year of ML, and I can add any annual leave allowance onto it.

VivClicquot · 04/07/2012 11:51

Six weeks of "enhanced pay" - which is the highest of either full basic pay or 90% of average earnings over a given 8 week period. For me, this just means I get full pay, but if I were in a commission-based role, it could mean you get more than your basic salary.

Then full pay for 12 weeks.

Stat for the remaining 21 weeks.

KitCat26 · 04/07/2012 11:52

Mine was 90% for 6 weeks then SMP for the rest (6mths I think) plus child benefit. I'd worked there for 7 years.

I saved all my holiday and went on leave early at 30 weeks - four weeks holiday (and you also accrue holiday whilst you are on maternity leave I think).

RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 04/07/2012 11:54

Zero. Am a contractor so only get to bill my hours plus I have no legal mat leave entitlement. Taking 3 months in total as they're prepared to hold the position open that long so am working to 39 wks.

Is my second child so I'm a bit more relaxed about it than I would have been last time. I also only work PT anyway (21hrs)

Not quite sure how the bf is going to work though as had a shocker with expressing last time.

cakeandcava · 04/07/2012 11:55

16 weeks full pay
23 weeks SMP
13 weeks unpaid

Then I can add annual leave allowance to the end of it to make up another 5 weeks.
