to not want to go to this

At my work the summer night out is a night at a greyhound racing track followed by a trip to a casino which is apparently across the road although this bit is only optional. Entry to the track is free and we will get two free tote bets (whatever that means) and free food. I think its rubbish and don't want to go but DP says I should go and as its free and it will be something new

Really? Confused

Do you often find it so hard to decide about something so trivial? Grin

Go, don't go - whatever!

WorraLiberty · 04/07/2012 09:17

Blimey that sounds like a bargain!

Entry to my local track is around £7 (on a weekend) and the food is quite expensive.

Have you ever been to the races? It's as fun night and you don't have to bet if you don't want to.

There are 13 races at mine and I just put £1 on each race...that way I expect to lose that amount and if I win a bit back it's a bonus.

LeoTheLateBloomer · 04/07/2012 09:17

Do you get on well with your colleagues?
Which bit do you think is rubbish?
Tbh I'm inclined to agree with your DP.

CailinDana · 04/07/2012 09:18

I've only been to greyhound racing a few times but every time it was an absolutely fantastic night and I loved it. Rather than just standing around chatting you can put little bets on (I never bet more than a euro) and have the excitement of watching the race and hoping you win something. It's more thrilling than it sounds, honestly.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 04/07/2012 09:20

The dogs is great fun and can be a fab night out. If you like your colleagues then go, if you dont want to get to know them and dont mind remaining a bit of an outcast then dont go.

Why dont you want to go really ?

bnad · 04/07/2012 09:21

It justs sounds really dull, watching some dogs run around a track after a fake hare, I will probably end up going though

Dog racing and free food, what's not to love. Try it, I think it sounds like a fun night.

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 04/07/2012 09:23

Could not think of a worse night out. Horrible. I would not go.

girlpancake · 04/07/2012 09:25

I would love this. If you've never been before its worth a try.

jubilucket · 04/07/2012 09:26

This is why I wouldn't go www.league.org.uk/content/343/What-s-Wrong-with-Greyhound-Racing-

DontmindifIdo · 04/07/2012 09:29

Actually, I thought that about dog racing, but went along as a friend wanted to go as part of their birthday party, it was sooo much fun (I got drunk and won lots, this might have helped my view). The races don't last very long, people get over excited wining £5 as if they've won £1m, drinks are plentiful and it's just a silly night out.

storminabuttercup · 04/07/2012 09:30

Bnad, I think I know which racecourse you mean, I had a fantastic time despite being apprehensive at first, the food was good.

Go, you may enjoy, if it's rubbish when you get there eat and say you've got a headache and come home!

AChickenCalledKorma · 04/07/2012 09:30

Personally, I'd hate it. I don't gamble and I'm not a big drinker, so there'd be nothing much for me to do. Sounds like a strange choice for a night out that is presumably supposed to include everyone who works there.

TiggyD · 04/07/2012 09:35

Watch the dog with the stripy vest at the back. He's got no chance!

myalias · 04/07/2012 09:35

Sounds to me like a fun night out. I went years ago and won £50 - it is not dull when you are on a winning streak. Take your DP good advice and go - you don't get much in this life for free.

TroublesomeEx · 04/07/2012 09:40

I wouldn't go.

Loads of rough blokes getting drunk and nasty food

Can't think of anything worse!

RubyandPumpkinandCharlie · 04/07/2012 09:43

Go, if you're into animal abuse. If you'd like to think about that one, have a look at the many items on this website: www.greytexploitations.com/resources-and-reports/cruelty-and-neglect

WorraLiberty · 04/07/2012 09:46

'Rough blokes'? Lol I suppose that depends on the area FolkGirl

OP, once you've put a little bet on, the adrenalin does start to rush and no sooner has one race ended, you're looking at betting on the next one Grin

It's a lot of fun so I think your DP is right...don't knock it til you've tried it.

Just give the Casino a miss.

TheTempest · 04/07/2012 09:47

It's a good laugh. Give it a go, if not, then don't! I don't think it needs angsting over!

controlpantsandgladrags · 04/07/2012 09:47

I would never ever go. Having adopted many retired greyhounds through the retired greyhound trust, I know what happens to those poor dogs :-(

hairylemon · 04/07/2012 09:49

I wouldnt go OP, I went once ages ago for DPs birthday because I didnt want to be a sour puss, and all I could think about was how expendable the dogs are once they are not on form anymore Sad

TroublesomeEx · 04/07/2012 09:49

I suppose you're right worra.

My mother now goes out with someone who likes to go to the dog track. I suppose I can't judge everyone by his standards!

badtasteflump · 04/07/2012 09:53

I wouldn't go for the same (animal cruelty) reasons as others have mentioned. If you don't want to miss out completely I would get one of them to let you know when they're leaving for the casino and meet them there.

uselesslife · 04/07/2012 09:55

It's actually good fun

hairylemon · 04/07/2012 10:00

good fun

"The average retirement age for a greyhound is 3-4 years old and they can live for 16 years. Every year, 10,000 dogs leave registered racing, but the Retired Greyhound Trust only organises homes for just over 3,000. Some of the remaining 7,000 dogs may find good homes, but others may be drowned, poisoned or shot."
