To actively dislike Scientology (even though I'm a lover not a fighter)

I watched a Panorama Doc about it and it seems like the most cultish cult of all cults I ever seen, devastating family, society and children's lives.

The whole thing seems really corrupt.

I'm happy to be proved wrong, does anyone on here have any experience of it?

Yeah, let's not forget that L. Ron was a sci fi writer. I seem to remember to seeing a transcript of his notes for the basis of it - it said something like "Big space opera style story". It's not remotely spiritual. It's a cynical cult of money making.

My neighbour was a $cientologist. She tried to get me to buy some vitamin drink that cost £250 for a box of sachets of what was essentially berocca. It was all part of this weird pyramid selling thing too.

I must admit I thought her a bit odd before I knew this, she really did have a slightly crazed shark eyedness about her. I was half expecting her to tell me she was a mormon or something, but no, it was the full nine yards loony business.

I was relieved when she moved away.

novakngood That's quite shocking that it was allowed to happen :(

Well no wonder Jada was reportedly shagging J - Lo's soon to be ex which ended that marriage - nutjob.

A couple of years back I had a lot of dealings with the Scientology movement in a professional capacity and on one occasion had to go the HQ in East Grinstead. Spooked me. They are clever, clever manipulators, I like to think of myself as fairly guarded professionally but they had personal information out of me within minutes shudders. Had to have a debrief afterwards with my boss as I was totally traumatised. Avoid, avoid, avoid!

L. Ron Hubbar developed it as a bet. He and a couple of other writers vied to produce the most credible "religion".

The others faded away without trace, but Scientology took off.

Made L. Ron v. rich.

He didn't believe anything he'd written, but laughrd all the way tot he bank.

You should be just as worried about the fact the the contender to being president of the US Mitt Romney is a devout Mormon which is another cult that believes that has it's core beliefs around the supposed fact that jesus reappeared the the USA and it was founded by a conman who claimed he had golden plates given to him by an angel called Moroni and only he could see the plates hidden in a sack and only he could interpret the writings on said plates from behind a cloth curtain with his head in a sack.

Weirder is that the US presidents are usually trying to avoid a theocratic leader somewhere in the world developing nuclear weapons and forcing religious laws on populations etc. and yet in the US itself there is a theocrat who just may win the votes to get his hands on the largest arsenal of weapons in history and of course instill his theocratic beliefs through anti woman rights laws etc on the population. Oh the irony of it all.

AKE2012 · 03/07/2012 22:36

Scientology scares me. I too watched the panorama program and the way they followed people about n knew everything about u. You are not allowed to jus leave the 'religion'(cult). I doubt christians or catholics would b hounded coz they left that religion(correct me if im wrong).

Theres jus something not quite right with it.

solidgoldbrass · 04/07/2012 02:53

All religions are scary dangerous bullshit when their peddlers get a degree of power. Because most people, really, a majority of people, are quite happy to accept that someone else's imaginary friend Is Right and will Fix Everything. And that's not in itself so awful; problems really come when the thick, lazy, unthinking people start to agree that Everything Would Be Wonderful if enough people can be made to kiss the imaginary friend's arse.
