Sports day in my local primary school has been cancelled again. This is the fourth time within a week. On 2 of these days, including today, it's not even raining. They claim the grass is wet, which it probably is. Aibu to be getting a bit annoyed now? Ds (5) really wants me there, so I'm trying to make myself avaiable to go and fit work / dd around these supposed 'sports day', which to be honest is a bit of a pain, although I have it much easier than other parents who have more children / ft jobs. What is wrong with the grass being a bit wet? We're in Wales, the grass is hardy ever dry!

All of ours (three diff schools!) have been cancelled. The grass being wet is because they usually have to sit on it while they are waiting.

YABU a bit - he's 5 and there will be tons of others.

But is it just wet or is it waterlogged or a complete bog? You will get some parents moaning that their little angels got wet/muddy/cold etc.

Slippy grass is probably a Health and Safety problem.

Ravilious · 03/07/2012 13:23

slippy grass is dangerous to run on. And I am a hardcore 'go outside to play' mum!

Bigwheel · 03/07/2012 13:24

It's just a bit damp, like dew. Certainly not waterlogged. Can't they stand whilst they wait? It's only a small school, I'm sure there won't be much waiting anyway to be honest. Apperciate there will be lots of others, but ds is so excited about doing his first one and I'm sick of having to rearrange stuff to enable me to be free to go.

I can see that Bigwheel. Trying to arrange to be there is a nightmare when they keep chopping and changing. Sad

Bigwheel · 03/07/2012 13:26

There is a big concrete yard they could do it on, as well as the field. But I guess they worry about grazed knees then. To be honest I think it's a bit health and saftey mad if the reason is slipping on wet grass. To rub salt into the wounds the sun has come out now :)

YABU, if a child runs on that grass then falls and breaks their wrist then it been a failure under health and safety. My dd didn't get a sports day because it was the leavers trip the same day but she was at her ballet exam. We shrugged and got on with.

Ravilious · 03/07/2012 13:30

Erm, it really isnt health and safety mad. I run an athletics club and believe me running fast on wet grass is one of the biggest causes of breaks, sprains and tears!

ontheedgeofwhatever · 03/07/2012 14:03

DD's was post phoned last Friday because the thunderstorms on Thursday flooded the field. Now waiting to see if it happens this Friday though looking at weather forecast don't hold out much hope. Its been an utterly lousy summer so far not surprised things keep getting cancelled :(

pumpkinsweetie · 03/07/2012 14:05

If the grass is wet, the mud underneath gets wet and stays wet for some time making it dangerous for running, jumping etc.
If a child were to break/sprain something the school would be to blame, its a health and saftey risk also.
Unfortunelty no-one is to blame but mothernature

Bigwheel · 03/07/2012 14:39

Ok I accept IABU :), obviously i wouldn't want any child to break a bone. Still annoying though, and I can't ever recall telling my kids 'don't run on the grass - its wet' or hearing any other parent saying it, still schools have to cover their own backs I guess.

It sounds disappointing more than anything. You had time off and it's DS's first one so it's understandable.

Queenofcake · 03/07/2012 14:41

LMAO - do they seriously think they will actually get dry grass this summer??

Weatherman says the gulf stream is fucked and its staying where it is for at least the next 2 weeks and even beyond.

Its not going to stop being damp and wet before the end of term.

Am also in a damo squelchy Wales and agree - the grass is hardly ever dry.

RubyFakeNails · 03/07/2012 14:43

YANBU. Cancelling 4 times? I would just say cancel the thing all together. It annoys me so much that schools seem to think I can just swan off from work. As if I don't spend time making arrangements specific to my absence that morning, moving meetings etc then all of a sudden its next week (can you tell I've recently had an issue with this).

Anddd the teacher sends a fucking note out saying how its so important to the dcs and blah blah blah we should really try and attend. This is despite the fact they know most of the parents at DD2s school are involved in shift work or their own businesses.

Rage.
