Time off in leiu

AIBU for thinking that if travel takes you well over your daily and weekly hours then you should be able to take it as time off in leiu (not commuting).

For the odd hour here and there I don't mind but a few weeks ago I had a week where I did an additional 18 hours and 15 of those were due to travel (including two 5am starts and nearly 10pm finishes due to long train journeys).

My organisation doesn't allow travel to be a reason for time off in leiu. I am due another few weeks like this one coming up and know I will be absolutely knackered due to early starts and late finishes. I could take a days holiday to catch up on sleep but I don't feel like I should have to. They seem to think it's fine for me because I don't have children.

No you are not.

My head office is a 2 1/2 hour drive away. I love it when I have to go up there each month as it allows me to build up my flexi.

What was in your contract?

squeakytoy · 03/07/2012 09:06

travel time unless specified is not paid usually, or included in your daily/weekly hours

have you been working at a location other than your normal place of work though, as that can be different?

I'm a HR director. My policy is anything over a normal commute exceeding 1 hour each way is given back as lieu.

But not for managers unless it's extremely excessive.

In my contract it basically says TOIL is at their discretion. On normal weeks it's fine as on most days my travel gets me back at around 15 minutes after I should be finishing. Thats fine.

I wasn't expecting as many trips of a much bigger distance but even that wouldn't be an issue if I could get TOIL.

It is a lovely organisation to work for and I don't want to rock the boat as I love them but their policies on things like this aren't tight enough really.

Do you have a sympathetic line manager?

We don't get TOIL for travel but I had a period where I had to do quite a few back to back trips overseas which were involving like you 5am starts and getting back at 10pm in the evening. My manager just agreed that I could come in late the next day and leave early to compensate for this.

Maybe you could ask if they could accomodate something like this where you have periods involving lots of additional travel?

Whoneedssleepanyway good idea. Thanks.

I guess I just wish they had a better policy for this.
