to worry about the effect wifi / mobile signals have on my unborn child?

whysoserious · 03/07/2012 07:29

22 weeks pregnant. Hormonal. Google addict. Sums me up pretty accurately about now.

Anyway, having googled about the effects of wifi and mobile signals on an unborn child I have stumbled across some scary articles (some more trustworthy than others).

This one was particularly scary

ecodynamiclivingsolutions.com/the-most-toxic-thing-to-your-pregnancy-that-you-completely-ignore/

I'm trying to limit my mobile use and we always turn our wifi off but there are 6-10 other signals around my house so not sure what the point is. Also loads at my place of work.

Am I being unreasonable to worry about the effects all these signals may have on my baby, now and after it is born?

Confused Ive never turned my wifi off since its been installed and I had my baby this January. He was fine. I know you may be genuinely Worried but this is a bit silly IMO and scare mongering. you know you shouldn't stand infront of a microwave either when it's on as it could leave you infertile.

TheSpokenNerd · 03/07/2012 07:42

Yanbu though everyone (mostly) will say YABU. i dont have a mobile...it's because of the risks. I dont think you are silly at all. There are links with mobiles and brain tumours...

TheSpokenNerd · 03/07/2012 07:44

link repaired

BellaOfTheBalls · 03/07/2012 07:44

YABU. Is worrying about it actually going to solve any of the issues? Are you going to go round to your neighbours and ask them to turn their wi-fi off for the sake of your unborn child? Refuse to go anywhere densely populated?

There are far more pressing dangers to worry about. Like the effect of stress hormones caused by anxiety on your baby.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 03/07/2012 07:44

Step away from google.

Worrying about it is pointless unless you have an option to go and live on a remote island and still recieve maternity care.

It's natural to worry about this stuff, but actually your worrying needlessly isn't great for the baby either. This is just one of those things that goes along with 21st century living, there's nothing you can do about it. And your baby will be fine anyway.

If you want to feel like you are doing something to help, eat lots of food that contains anti oxidants.

Tee2072 · 03/07/2012 07:46

Oh please, there are links between breathing and brain tumours.

Wifi is everywhere. Mobile signals are going through you right now whether you are using a mobile or not.

It's not going to hurt your baby any more than any other radiation, of which there is tons in the background of our lives, will.

Don't live your life in fear. Find out the facts.

As for you SpokenNerd...not much of a nerd if you don't have a mobile. Perhaps a namechange?

TheSpokenNerd · 03/07/2012 07:47

Though OP....having read that article I do think t seems flimsy and lacking in proper research...she does not quote any university or any research properly...just says things like "research says" Hmm

Tee2072 · 03/07/2012 07:47

Even on a remote island you're going to get blanket with radio/GPS/etc etc etc signals. They blanket the planet FFS!

TheSpokenNerd · 03/07/2012 07:48

Tee I'm not THAT kind of nerd! Grin More of a comic book nerd.

daffydowndilly · 03/07/2012 07:52

My x was a physicist and as he pointed out there is more radiation waves from space and the sun than from wifi, that and it is everywhere bouncing around the Earth, you can't get away from it (even in a shack in the Nevada Desert). And if you want to go down the worrying route, what about pesticides in food and water, alcohol, second hand smoke, air pollution from roads, chemical residues in tap water, chemical residues in bottled water, mobile phones, infection risks, parasites, radiation from chernobyl, chemical industries, landfills, incinerators, medication you are prescribed....

Really, I can treble that list. But humans are extremely resilient and the development of babies amazing. And we all haven't given birth to babies with 4 heads (yet). So YABU and stay away from google, there are a lot of really sensational, scientifically unproven websites from people who want their 5 minutes of fame. If you are truly truly worried call the Health Protection Agency (hpa.org.uk) and ask to speak to someone who specialises in radiation (wifi) and ask their advice. I believe they will say poppy cock to the whole thing.

BartletForAmerica · 03/07/2012 07:52

Are you concerned about radio signals? They are going through your body and surrounding your house right now! And they are harmless. And just the same as WiFi!

YABU but I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt. In pregnancy, I certainly worried about things much more, even when it was completely irrational, so I don't blame you, but there is a lot of nonsense on the internet.

CasperGutman · 03/07/2012 08:18

YANBU to be worried, given all the scare stories that are out there. It's only natural you wish to protect your child from any threat, however illusory it may on fact be. Those who post these sorts of silly scare stories online, badly researched and unsupported by the facts, ABU though.

imsotired · 03/07/2012 08:20

i was so worried about a power station ( one of those neighbourhood ones, not the industiral ones) i moved house

I have never had wifi in the house, i prefer to plug everything.

however evertyhing else i have no control over so dont stress about. it would be useless because i couldnt change anything no matter how i felt.

Trills · 03/07/2012 08:24

YANBU to be worried, given all the scare stories that are out there.

I disagree. YABU to be worried by scare stories that you read on the internet.

Every time you read something that worries you, run down the following questions:
Who wrote this?
What did they hope to achieve by writing it?
What assumptions are they making (but not stating), and do I agree with those assumptions?
Do they make logical-sounding statements about things that don't actually follow on from one another at all? (e.g. if cats are carnivores then mice like cheese)

MrsBucketxx · 03/07/2012 08:25

make sure you stop away from mac donalds starbucks or anywhere that has free wifi and bt hotspot too.

madness totall madness

openerofjars · 03/07/2012 08:54

And then there's dark matter...

Jenny70 · 03/07/2012 09:41

Chill.

Radiation, radio waves are natural and all around us, varying where you are on the planet.

And by 22w your baby is made, it's mainly getting fatter.

Stick to what is in your control - diet, stress and exercise - step away from google!

Snorbs · 03/07/2012 09:50

The page the OP linked to links, in turn, to a study by the Ramazzini Institute. I'm not a trained scientist but the Ramazzini paper (pdf) appears quite, um, selective in the studies it bases its conclusions on on. Anything that confirms its view that there is a risk is treated as gospel and anything that doesn't is dismissed as propaganda from the mobile phone industry Hmm

There is also a lot of criticism of the Ramazzini Institute in general that can be found with some quick googling. It seems the institute has quite a track record of accusing all sorts of things of causing cancer with dubious scientific data to back those claims up.

Another thing to consider is that WiFi operates at much lower power levels than mobile phone signals.

Sallyingforth · 03/07/2012 10:10

All the official recognised studies in every country say there is no problem.

Your own house/flat is a maze of wiring that creates electrical and magnetic fields all around you every day.

If there was a problem it would have shown up decades ago.

Don't worry.

whysoserious · 03/07/2012 15:45

I wonder what the effects of smartphones will be

OP posts:
BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 03/07/2012 15:55

YABU!! I would stay away from google to be honest before you turn very very neurotic!!

TalkinPeace2 · 03/07/2012 16:00

If its not safe for your baby, it sure as heck was not safe for you or your mum

the radio and TV transmitter power now is MUCH lower than it was 30 years ago before any digital signals

hairylemon · 03/07/2012 16:00

Pfp op? :)

Google December 2012 if you really want to read something worth getting shitted up about

Tee2072 · 04/07/2012 05:44

The effect of smart phones? No different than the effect of any computer,

Truly, get a grip.
