To wonder if ALL of the "work at home" adverts are scams?

Just wondering, really. Am looking for some supplemental part time work so I can buy groceries, etc. I keep seeing these adverts that say "work from home, set your own hours, etc". Has anybody actually answered one of these ads, and are they all scams? (or phone sex, maybe?)

I think you would probably better off creating your own, 'work from home job".

Sparklingbrook · 02/07/2012 18:39

OOh are these the ones where you can earn £4500 a month or something? Grin

Bossybritches22 · 02/07/2012 18:44

A lot of them are horrible pyramid selling type things.

I've been trying to find out about a phone sex job without clogging up my PC with shite from nasty websites.

I am desperately skint & I have been told I have a nice (read sexy) voice on more than one occasion so thought I'd look in to it. Grin

Let me know if you stumble across anything find any interesting leads OP!

Also watching with interest- would like to cut my hours at work and do something from home to make up the shortfall

I researched a few and they all just seemed dodgy as hell - most wanted some sort of money up front, which isn't exactly what you start working for.

The only thing which seemed like a possible go-er was a Virtual PA franchise I saw - I'm pretty sure there was a thread on MN about it. If I hadn't then got a "real" job I might have pursued it.

solidgoldbrass · 02/07/2012 19:05

If they don't say what the job involves then it's a scam. Well, not a total scam, but it will be Kleeneze or Bettaware or some other form of sales; with the reputable ones you can make a few quid a week if you are lucky, but the best options for this sort of thing are Usborne/Avon.
BTW phone sex companies do advertise (try the classifieds in the local paper - or PM me if you want a recommendation).

Good to know, SGB. I do make and sell crafts from home, but sales are pretty grim at the moment. So I may try to pick up some work on one of the freelance work sites like peopleperhour.

Do you have any other marketable skills such as ironing/dogwalking? You could maybe try a card in the newsagents' window or an ad on gumtree offering services, too. Or there's leaflet distribution which keeps you nice and fit and is not a bad job if you work for a decent company/boss.

fuzzypicklehead · 02/07/2012 21:44

My main skills are administrative and independent living support skills (helping people with special needs) but I would enjoy leaflet distribution. The thought of just walking, with some headphones on for hours at a time... I'd almost pay to do that!
