AIBU in not wanting to be a directress?

I'm a 30 something man. I've looked at the websites of 2 Montessori nurseries and found out they call their staff "Directresses". Are they trying to keep men out of their businesses or are they just thick?

What like "Airhostess"?
I think it is just what they call the collective. Like "actors" being the collective noun for a group of actors and actresses.
Maybe they haven't had any men apply yet?
Why not contact them and ask?

Katisha · 02/07/2012 15:19

I'm a woman and wouldn't want to be called a directress

TheSpokenNerd · 02/07/2012 15:21

How odd...why don't you ask them?

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 02/07/2012 15:21

In my brain, it looks like they are people physically made of dresses.

TheSpokenNerd · 02/07/2012 15:22

Jus googled and they call their male staff Directors. I think it's odd they distinguish the females more!

Justfeckingdoit · 02/07/2012 15:23

Weird. I'm a director and would find being called a directress odd.

I mean, it's pretty obvious from my name that I'm female.

What next, Chief Executive Woman?

wfhmumoftwo · 02/07/2012 15:24

are you looking for employment there? If so i dont think the name of the role is that important, rather then job you will be doing and the satisfaction it brings you.
Personally i think nurseries and primary schools could benefit from more male teachers and carers so go for it if you have the skills!

Johnnydeppsnewmrs · 02/07/2012 15:32

Well there you go, they call the men "Directors" and use Directresses as a collective.
I think I would rather be a director than a Directress.

TiggyD · 02/07/2012 15:41

Do you not think "Montessori Teacher" would be better? Or "Director/Directress"?

Bizarre. The Academy Awards persist with the word 'actress', but even they deem directors to be beyond gender.

Treblesallround · 02/07/2012 15:46

Directress sounds a bit S & M to me (but I'm probably just being weird)

PenisVanLesbian · 02/07/2012 15:48

-ess is a diminutive. It's demeaning.

Callisto · 02/07/2012 15:50

I would hate to be a 'directress'. It just sounds weird and wrong and sexist. What the hell is wrong with males and females being directors fgs.

Callisto · 02/07/2012 15:51

Trebles - it makes me think of large, Germanic ladies wearing tweed for some reason.

TheSmallClanger · 02/07/2012 15:53

It sounds a bit BDSM to me as well. Possibly involving large ladies who look like James Bond villains.

Treblesallround · 02/07/2012 15:54

You have a healthier mind than me Callisto!

VeronicaSpeedwell · 02/07/2012 15:58

It's very Chalet School.

VeronicaSpeedwell · 02/07/2012 15:59

It's very Chalet School (as well as offensive and absurd).

TheFirstMrsGClooney · 02/07/2012 16:03

DS2 went to a Montessori nursery for a while, we (and he) were meant to call staff by Mr/Miss FirstName, eg Miss Fiona. Was weird and I ended up just using their first names. The owner was a fruit loop but not sure if she described herself as a Directress though!

MsVestibule · 02/07/2012 16:18

Sounds ridiculous to me. I think you should apply, then lobby to make the change once you're in!

TiggyD · 02/07/2012 17:39

Er....after a brief exchange of e-mails they told me never to contact them again.BlushGrin

The job advert they placed advertise for a Montessori Teacher - male or female.

I'm pretty sure that accounts for everybody! I always assume jobs are for males or females(Except exempt jobs, but that's always mentioned), because it's illegal otherwise.
