To be willing to give anything to see the Head Master lead by example (making kids swim in the rain)

That's it in a nutshell really.

It's chucking it down out there. Has been for two hours at least. It's windy enough to be making the trees thrash about. It's cold.

But the HM's policy is for the kids to have their swimming lesson come what may.

I've just seen the latest batch of the poor kids trudging up the hill (part grass, part path) from the open air pool, soaking wet and with their towels clutched round them, shivering.

I know 'worse things happen at sea' - but i'm damn sure it'll be a cold day in hell before the HM comes out of his warm office and shows them how refreshing he finds it to swim in all + any weather Hmm

Rant over. AIBU?

But they'll get wet in the pool anyway won't they?

WorraLiberty · 02/07/2012 12:16

Well he's done his schooling hasn't he?

Presumably he also learnt to swim.

I know the weather's shit but it's July!

Anyway, if they don't like the rain they can duck under the water so they don't get wet Wink

Tee2072 · 02/07/2012 12:16

YABU

The number one advantage of being a grown up is that you don't have to do what kids have to do.

It won't kill them to be cold and wet.

peeriebear · 02/07/2012 12:17

I remember being made to swim in the school open air pool in pouring rain on a miserable grey day. It was fucking horrible. Getting wet in the pool is hardly comparable!

rainydaysarebad · 02/07/2012 12:17

Bah. We were made to do it when we were children and survived. I remember once my friend's ponytail plait had icicles in it as it was so cold. Children are too mollycoddled these days. I'm sure the HM did his fair share of swimming in the cold in his childhood.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 02/07/2012 12:18

YABU - he cant hardly shuffle the schedule about because its wet and windy!! I dont think it will kill them to be honest.

EdithWeston · 02/07/2012 12:18

The water will seem warmer if they've been briefly cold on the wa up. They'll be fine.

< shudders at thought of our HM in trunks >
< perks up thinking of PE teacher instead >

lovebunny · 02/07/2012 12:19

he should not put children's health at risk. this might have killed my daughter - she's prone to chest complaints and had to be excused 'normal' indoor swimming.

get the press onto it. he'll lose his job. unless its and asthma school, in which case they do all sorts of open air stuff to keep the lungs working.

sebastianthesingingaubergine · 02/07/2012 12:19

YABU

There's nothing wrong with swimming in the rain. I love swimming in the rain.

Is the headmaster worth seeing in his speedos??

saintlyjimjams · 02/07/2012 12:19

I quite like swimming in the rain, although trudging up the hill to get changed in the rain with only a wet towel sounds miserable. You need a dry changing room right next door for it to be fun.

LauraShigihara · 02/07/2012 12:19

Mine have often had swimming lessons at school in the rain. Toughens 'em up.

ShatnersBassoon · 02/07/2012 12:19

It will strengthen them Grin

Children don't care about inclement weather like adults do. They'll have enjoyed it.

fluffyanimal · 02/07/2012 12:21

Unless you know the temperature of the open air pool, YABU.

fluffyraggies · 02/07/2012 12:21

More messages than i expected Grin

I know they're getting wet anyway - but brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! It is horrid for them.

It wouldn't take any reshuffling of lessons. The same staff are with them whatever the lesson. It's a primary school. Some of these kids are year 1 :(

What?? For making kids go swimming in the wind and rain?? Yeah, very exciting headline news that would make Hmm

sebastianthesingingaubergine · 02/07/2012 12:22

Get the press onto it. He'll lose his job

Seriously? I don't think so.

sebastianthesingingaubergine · 02/07/2012 12:23

cross posts Betty

imnotmymum · 02/07/2012 12:23

Character building !! I hate this" it raining we cannot do anything !! " it is only a bit of water !! Agree that should have a changing room nearer though but I loved our outdoor pool at school

fluffyraggies · 02/07/2012 12:23

Ha ha ha - head master is not worht seeing in speedo's.

Plump, balding, early 40's.

OP posts:
ENSMUM · 02/07/2012 12:24

But lovebunny it won't kill most children - surely children with known health complaints that it will affect would be excued anyway? All the other children can't miss out on doing anything that certain children can't do for their own health reasons!

CadleCrap · 02/07/2012 12:25

Perhaps he is trying to teach the children some resilence. which sadly cotton wool parenting reduces to practically zero.

AThingInYourLife · 02/07/2012 12:25

Swimming in the rain is ace.

My 9 year old self is jealous of them.

What a riduculous comment! Its rain..... not 50 lashes of the strap

VonHerrBurton · 02/07/2012 12:27

My ds would love that! He would see it as a real adventure and a treat, swimming in the rain, so would most of his friends, come to think of it! When I was a child, our neighbours had a pool outside and one of my earliest and happiest memories was jumping in and sliding down the slide in the rain. Jeez, it's not January!

Barring any pre-existing medical condition that would be exacerbated, I imagine they would all love it.

snuffaluffagus · 02/07/2012 12:27

We had an outdoor pool at school and during the summer term had to go in when it was raining (unless it was FREEZING and lashing it down). I really didn't mind though, I like swimming when it's raining.. and it's not going to do any harm.

What I did hate was having to change (in haste in order to get to the next lesson) in the minging, damp, gloomy tent like changing rooms next to the pool (this was in the early/mid 90's) and having wet hair dripping down my school shirt for ages afterwards! I recognise we were lucky to have a pool though so I won't complain about that too much!
