they had sports day in the morning on thurs and because i thought it was meant to rain i didn't put sun cream on ds. Their sports day started at 10 and ended at 11.15am.

they apparently spent all afternoon in the playground in the sun from lunchtime until the end of school learning about the olympics or something. ds's neck was red raw and he's been complaining that its sore ever since. he's had to sleep with no top on cos he said it was rubbing, and ive been putting sudocream on it morning and night.

ds's friend was also off school sick friday supposedly from too much sun.

Yes i should have put lotion on him for sports day, but they were only out for 1 and a half hours in the morning. had i known they would be out all afternoon in the sun i would have taken steps to ensure he wouldn't get burnt. but surely the school should have done this?

do i have a right to be annoyed with the school or not really?

Your poor son!
Rather than have a go at the school it maybe worth checking their sun policy and maybe discussing with them ways to improve this. For example wearing hats, not being in direct sun for over a set period.

I do feel strongly that we all need to take this issue seriously especially as I have now had/have 3 family members suffer with skin cancer.

Well, at nursery the children were simply not allowed to play outside in the sun without a hat. They all knew that, so they all wore one. I don't see why staff in reception and yr 1 can't have the same rule.
I do get a bit sick of the attitude sometimes of " of well, they have so many children you just cant expect the teachers to monitor these things".
Actually, I do expect them to make sure little kids don't get sun burned/sunstroke. At ds's school there are 2 staff to 30 kids, plus usually at least one parent helper. It's not an impossible ask for them to say "put a hat on".
