To be dreading the "Mums" race at sports day

I hated all that competitive stuff the first time around. Now I will have my DC's hopes pinned on me too, poor critters.

Better get into training now I suppose.

I was working and missed sports day this year, but up until now, I have always entered the mums' race and dh always enters the dads' race because the kids absolutely love to see us do it and cheer us on.

Who cares if you win or lose? Just like we tell them - it's about making the effort.

typicalvirgo · 30/06/2012 22:32

Grin I came 2nd this year and I was wearing fit flops .

There is a bottle of wine for first place so its a very competitive race Grin

Bluestocking · 30/06/2012 22:35

Really, Porky? I think my DS would die of shame if I took part in a mum's race.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 30/06/2012 22:36

Just say no. You don't have to do it.

I agree it is all the fault of Princess Di running it in a frumpy skirt.

LucieMay · 30/06/2012 22:37

Just wear heels and lie to your dc "Oh I'm so sorry sweetheart, I can't possibly run in these shoes!" as I shall be doing!

LucieMay · 30/06/2012 22:39

I'm just too fat to run it in reality- I refuse to suffer the indignity of hurling myself along next to the super skinnies who ran it last year, with my belly, butt and boobs and flailing everywhere. Nope, no way.

scottishmummy · 30/06/2012 22:40

how fucking hard is it to say. naw
silly excuses, bandages
grow a spine say no

Trish1200 · 30/06/2012 22:48

My son is not at school yet, so I don't know how the atmosphere is like, but I must be just a bit of fun and a good laugh no??

Not taking part will not give children a good example for when they may want to refuse to take part in PE classes.

scottishmummy · 30/06/2012 22:52

the words good and laugh aren't often used for the schoolgates and frankly it's the pe teacher job to get the weans running about.not the mammies

Queenofcake · 30/06/2012 22:53

Oh God No! No No no!!!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Dont do it. Summer of 2004 was the first "proper" sports day I attended. I naively thought it was a case if flinging off the flip flops and attempting a gentle jog. No.

One mum pulled off her skirt to reveal some little running shorts beneath. Changed out of her sandals and called over to her husband and I kid you not said "Not the trainers love, grass is still a little damp, my spikes are in there"

So yes Alpha mum in running shorts and spikes beat us all but that was not the worse of it. I skidded in my barefeet slipped over had a boobage malfunction, boobs managed to bounce their way out of my inadequate for running bra. Not only did I come last but every parent and teacher and pupil (and my poor kids) witnessed me fall arse over tit (literally - boobage spilling out). I had to spend the rest of sports day with nice muddy skid marks and grass stains up one leg, one side of my skirt and vest top and all up my arm and even on my face. No fucker told me I had grass stains on my face. I discovered that driving home 2 hours or so later when I looked in the rear view mirror. I had stood there looking like this through the sodding prize giving clapping and smiling away and then had even gone up infront of the whole school again to collect my raffle prize.Blush

To say Iwas morified does not come close. On the day I laughed and smiled it off but inside I was cringeing like no tomorrow. I had to drive home with the humilating thought that DD was only in reception and I had to face these people every day for the next 6 years.

Thankfuklly we moved house before the next sports day.

I hate sports day now. I dont run anymore and neither DC ask me to - I think they are quietly relieved I dont bother.

jellybeans · 30/06/2012 22:57

At our school only the mums or dads who volunteer do it. Four super fit joggers did it last time. Although - had my own race chasing toddler DS around the field. If asked I would just decline , they can't force you!

scottishmummy · 30/06/2012 22:57

oh dear god spikes that's priceless
you must have died a 1000 deaths.

LucieMay · 30/06/2012 22:58

Queenofcake- I'm so sorry for your misfortune but that did make me titter! What happened to you is what I envisage happening to me in my head.

Why on earth would it set a bad example for the kids? My dc is a skinny little six year old whippersnapper who loves sport and loves zipping about. As he regularly tells me, I am his chubby mother who only runs for the bus or when we're crossing the road. There's no comparison between kids doing PE at school and their mothers humiliating themselves in front of everyone.

PorkyandBess · 30/06/2012 22:59

Blimey, our school is not that intense.

We all do it barefoot, it's just a laugh (although you do get a ribbon!).

winedrip · 30/06/2012 23:06

Ok I am worried now, have a sports day coming up....I do actually run quite a bit, and don't think I am slow, but cannot even imagine getting into 'competetive mode' at a school sports day event. It really should be about having a laugh, and if anything, just doing a little jog and downplaying your own part in it surely it is just for the kids to see their mums looking silly!....Some parents are bonkers now aren't they?

Nuttyprofessor · 30/06/2012 23:06

After losing 6 and a half stone in the past 18 months my 25 year old dd won the mums race. :)

Bluestocking · 30/06/2012 23:12

"Some parents are bonkers now aren't they?"
Ain't that the truth, winedrip?

BigHairyFlowers · 30/06/2012 23:19

Our school doesn't have parents races for sports day, not in KS1 anyway. If they should be introduced, I have a plan to pay off some kids to do the whole writing 'cunt' on the field in weedkiller thing so sports day is cancelled - many thanks to whoever suggested that on the cancelled sports day thread yesterday..

Just Say No!

ReportMeNow · 30/06/2012 23:32

Am sorry queenofcakes but Grin

There are two extended families at dcs' school who get in position very early and line the 100m stretch; they take sports day very seriously indeed. it did not go well when another mum emerged quietly from the shadows and won the race last year.

Pendeen · 30/06/2012 23:34

Queenofcake

I feel your pain. Really.

One - and one only - bloody sports day mums' race I literally bounced my way to the finish line.

My norks are not huge by any means (D cup) but I was in absolute agony when I staggered over the line.

Never, ever, for-never, again!

Nibledbyducks · 30/06/2012 23:34

They've stopped the mum's race at my DC's school. I very grateful, the one year that I was persuaded to join in I managed to flash the only male teacher my left nipple, never again.

clemetteattlee · 30/06/2012 23:46

Trish, I assumed the same and when DD was in reception I was all ready to run "for a laugh". When fifteen women stood up in cycling shorts and trainers and SPRINTED the race I realised it wasnt for the likes of me and I haven't done it since.
DD not bothered. She understands that it is touch and go if I can get there anyway.

clemetteattlee · 30/06/2012 23:46

Every year they dip at the finishing line...

fossil97 · 30/06/2012 23:49

I think it's worth helping on the PTA stall to avoid it actually. Once was enough.

winedrip · 30/06/2012 23:54

Oh my god, some of the stories on this thread cannot be true. How bizarre. Are some people that bored / competetive / insecure? Why would anyone actually give a monkeys about winning the mum's race? Spikes? Running shorts? Etc....I wear those when I 'go for a run'. Not when I am going to my childs sports day. Jesus!
