to have a car that doesn't take a baby seat

but have 18 month old grandson - surely eventually he can sit on a booster? Or should I have something practical (it's a 2+2 sort of thing, neither front bucket seats nor back bench thing will accommodate full car seats apparently) so I can be more helpful?

will be ages before he can use booster :/

derekthehamster · 30/06/2012 18:04

do his parents have a car? You are only bu if you expect to take him out in your car

JumpingThroughHoops · 30/06/2012 18:06

Roof rack. Only way. Wink

lorisparkle · 30/06/2012 18:06

We put my mum on my car insurance - might not be a perfect answer but might give a different option.

difficultpickle · 30/06/2012 18:06

What car is it? I had a MX5 and that coped with all sizes of car seats.

Alameda · 30/06/2012 18:06

obviously am not taking him out in my car without a seat, I could drive my daughter's car (but it doesn't have power steering Shock) but she usually needs it

was just wondering if it is part of grand matriarch role to get a sensible car or if is ok to just not

depends on what you mean by a 'full car seat'. I wouldn't choose to sit a child of any age on just a booster cushion (as opposed to a high backed booster), and it sounds as though the bucket seat/bench seat might not accomdate this either.

having said that, if you were my parent, then I would bung you on my insurance and you could take our second car out for the day - this would get around my (some say neurotic) insistence on eg extended RF seats, and high backed boosters etc.

Alameda · 30/06/2012 18:08

it's a Peugeot and I just remember them saying 'you cannot use baby seats' but a booster was ok for younger child then, not because of airbags but the actual seats

maybe should check, is 6 yrs old now, things might have changed

It's up to you - how could it not be?
If you want to take your grandson out in your car, then you need a carseat, it's the law. If you aren't bothered there's no obligation to do so though. Just walk, or use public transport, or don't take him anywhere.

TidyDancer · 30/06/2012 18:09

Well in your position I wouldn't want to have a car that couldn't take a car seat, and I would expect if your GS has responsible parents, they will not be rushing him to a booster seat only.

Don't expect to drive your GS for several years if you choose a car that won't take a car seat, but don't be railroaded into choosing a car you don't want just so you can be helpful.

derekthehamster · 30/06/2012 18:09

No need for the grandparents to have a sensible car imo. I can't wait to have an impractical car Grin

Alameda · 30/06/2012 18:10

my daughter only has one car though and she usually needs it - village life - although I am insured to drive any car with permission

A Peugeot what model? Can you turn off the airbag? Mine had a transponder so turned off automatically with the right car seat.

silverfrog · 30/06/2012 18:13

it is totally up to you, and it also depends on how much taking out for the day/driving you are planning on doing with your grandson.

I don't suppose 2 cars are an option for you Grin?

I wouldn't put an under-4 into high backed booster (dd2 is 5.6, and is still in her RF toddler seat, and will be for the next year or so. she is quite slight though), so that is quite some way off.

olimpia · 30/06/2012 18:13

Of course you can fit a car seat (unless your car is like 30 years old)? All you need is rear seatbelt. Are you sure the shop wasn't referring to isofix car seats when they said you couldn't have one?

BertieBotts · 30/06/2012 18:14

Britax and Maxi Cosi both have fit finders on their website where you put your model of car in and it tells you whether they have seats to fir it.

Alameda · 30/06/2012 18:14

it's not the airbags (but yes can turn all but driver one off) it's something to do with the seats

my children didn't really have much to do with grandparents so have little to go on by way of what is a reasonable adjustment to make - we don't have to go anywhere by car, hopefully not A&E anyway, just wondering if am being a bit selfish

Grin at it being law about car seats, am 41 not a visitor from Early Modern times

Oh will try britax/maxi così site - thanks. The salesman could have been talking shit, has stayed with me for some reason

I could talk myself into needing a land rover again but scared of and do not miss its expense

maxi così have a couple that should fit, thanks!

nice to have the option isn't it, should have asked on here ages ago

I think Britax have a website where you can check whether it will fit the make/model of car. I'd be very surprised if it can't accommodate a car seat. My MX5 was an 02 and I had no difficulties getting a car seat (the purchase pre-dated the unexpected arrival of ds). Ds now 8 and only got rid of the car last week so we went through 3 sizes of car seats in it.

Alameda · 30/06/2012 18:40

I might have been being a bit thick with the britax site but couldn't narrow it down to the exact car, got on better with maxi così. They will fit it for me, right?

Well my mum doesn't even have a car, but I guess if you live somewhere a car is necessary it does limit you more, she can always use bus here if needed

Blueoctopus · 30/06/2012 19:55

My dad had a babyseat in his 911 for DS when he was a toddler. No need for a grandparent to have a sensible car whatsoever.
