Received a letter from them this morning dated 22/06/2012 telling me they've cancelled my insurance policy. No reason, no explanation, just a cancellation note dated eight days ago and proof of my no claims on the back.

Has to be a mistake, thinks I, I've always paid for mine and DP's policy, we're up to date with payments and they haven't cancelled HIS part of the policy, I'll ring them and they'll tell me the letter was sent in error.

After twenty minutes of being held in a queue paying 8p a minute to do so, a lady in the call centre finally answers. Yes, my policy has been cancelled, is that okay? Er, no it's fucking not okay, it's most definitely as far from okay as is possible for a statement to be. "Would you like me to check why Miss PomBears?" Oh, only if it wouldn't be too much trouble!

Another ten minutes of being on hold and she comes back and tells me the company don't know why the policy has been cancelled. The underwriters did it. They MIGHT be able to tell me why on Monday.

So the upshot is they took my money for the month, cancelled the policy 10 days later (this is not a new policy by the way, we've had their multi car policy since November) with no financial reimbursement and leaving me open to prosecution should the police have pulled me over or had I been involved in an accident in the past eight days.

Anyone had this happen? WIBU to take this to the appropriate ombudsman/consumer direct?

Omg! Unbelievable

ErikNorseman · 30/06/2012 11:24

If you are currently unInsured I would buy new policy online now, you will be covered immediately and you get 14 days to cancel if you change your mind which should give you enough time to sort things with admiral.

1sassylassy · 30/06/2012 11:27

You have to find out why the Insurance policy has been cancelled,if you go for a new policy, you will have to declare that you have had insurance cancelled and this will bump your premiums up.

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 30/06/2012 11:28

Yeah I'm getting quotes now, I'm horrified that I've been driving uninsured for over a week. Can't believe they just blithely stuck a letter in second class post, no phonecall, no recorded delivery, nothing.

This is outrageous. I hope you get it sorted out. Please update the outcome as I also have a multi car policy with them. If you can wait until Monday though I would. As sassy says you'll have to declare that you've had a policy cancelled.
Actually, on second thoughts I'd call them back and demand to know why. This would make me very shouty.

I think I would be going to the Financial ombudsman for the simple fact that they have let you drive with no insurance, surely the least they could have done is phone you.

mumcanihavearabbit · 30/06/2012 11:55

0800 118 1611 thats a freefone number for admiral.

Have you made a claim recently, or perhaps not declared something to them for example, a medical condition, points or criminal record maybe??

DH had his policy cancelled 2 years ago as although the asked about motoring convictions, one of the assumptions were that he didnt have a criminal record. After being bumped into by a neighbour, he then tried to claim against us, and next thing we know the policy was cancelled and we had to pay out. (nothing t-cut wouldnt have fixed) This was due to negihbour telling them that my DH had previous non-motoring convivtions.

The eventually honoued the remainder of the policy as we had been in touch with the financial ombudsman as at no point what so ever were we asked about any, and it later came out that they have certain assumptions when they quote you for policies and allow you to take one out.

Hope you get it sorted

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 30/06/2012 12:10

I did think about that rabbit but I don't think the cancellation can have anything to do with me as a driver as I'm a named driver on DP's car and they're happy for me to continue driving that Confused

Oh and also I declared my two SP30s and I don't have a criminal record!

Ah i see, so you can still drive your car, just no OH's car??? Hmmm, strange. Let us know how you get on. Who are the underwriters?

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 01/07/2012 10:35

Update:

Finally managed to find out why the insurance was cancelled and it turns out they sent a letter, to the wrong address, asking me to send my counterpart, gave me five days to respond, then just went ahead and cancelled the insurance Shock

Turns out the address they sent it to is in the next street. But they won't reinstate our car insurance until Monday, and won't refund us for the ten days we haven't been insured even though they've fully admitted it was their fault. DP needs his car for work, so asked if he could go and get a new car insurance policy with another insurer so he would be insured for Monday and the cheeky twats said yes, as long as he paid a cancellation fee to Admiral!

I've sent a boringly long complaint email to them and copied in the Financial Ombudsman and Watchdog so hopefully that'll scare them into some results.

That's terrible service. I work for one of Admirals's biggest competitors and we'd have our arses kicked by the ombudsman for behaviour like that. I hope they kick Admirals's arse for you.

WhiteWidow · 01/07/2012 10:41

Idiots! They wrongly took 940 pounds from my friends account recently and it was a palarva getting it back.

oiwheresthecoffee · 01/07/2012 10:44

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 01/07/2012 11:13
