a mother with a new baby running for President and publicly admitting to breastfeeding, having a DP who shares care of their children equally, and being unmarried.

I find it so depressing that this wouldn't happen here.

Her new baby is running for President?

Wow!

You're right, it wouldn't happen in the UK

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 29/06/2012 16:18

Jeez, you gotta hand it to those Icelanders - their kids are much more advanced than us!

My DS could run for preseidency...doesnt mean he will get there :)

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 29/06/2012 16:18

presidency - bloody phone!

Kladdkaka · 29/06/2012 16:20

Different cultures. The viking way is find your man, have your babies, then get married once his fertility and domestic usefulness is established.

OneHandFlapping · 29/06/2012 16:24

Hmmm Kladdkaka, seems like we could take a leaf out the Viking book there.

YANBU - no-one can "run for president" in the UK so you are right that it could never happen

Krumbum · 29/06/2012 16:26

I think even America are more advanced than us! I do not see the uk hsving a non white primeminister for a long time.

AuntySib · 29/06/2012 16:27

Good for her - what an inspiration!
I'm not a fan of Sarah Palin' politics, but she's the only other example I can think of , of a woman campaigning with newborn baby ( and other children) in tow. Hats off to them both, but I would say you need someone else to take over household in order to do this, either partner, relatives or paid help.
Wondering what it is about the society in Iceland which makes it one of the fairest places to live? Northern Europe seems to do so much better on this front than the rest of the world ( look at Scandanavian childcare policies, green legislation etc). They are about 30 years ahead of the rest of us!

GrimmaTheNome · 29/06/2012 16:27

No, but I think this part could happen here:
'The baby is called Sky, which means "cloud". ' Grin

I don't know, that scenario is unlikely to happen here any time soon but I wouldn't say it could never be possible.

eurochick · 29/06/2012 16:29

America has never had a female President though and we have had both a female PM and Head of State.

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 29/06/2012 16:29

Oh, I don't know about the US, they have yet to elect a female president and we had Maggie 20 years ago...and they'd never be happy about the bf element!

Aribura · 29/06/2012 16:30

yes electing a president just because they've had a baby is an excellent idea what a shame we can't elect token categories here

FireOverBabylon · 29/06/2012 16:35

Aribura, there's no suggestion in the article that she's been nominated as a token "new mum" candidate, she is a genuine serious candidate who happens to have a new baby. In this country women standing for election at local council or MP level still get asked who will look after their children whilst she is involved in politics.

It is great. But the population of Iceland is about 200,000. About equal to Rochdale.

Krumbum · 29/06/2012 18:20

I think things are worse for women in some ways now. Being more sexualised means women are taken much less seriously, I don't think people would vote for a female prime minister now.

JumpingThroughHoops · 29/06/2012 18:44

Why wouldn't it happen here? Perhaps - just perhaps - women here aren't arsed about running for Icelandic President Grin

Seriously though, Cherie Blair did a wonderful job pulling the puppet husbands strings whilst giving birth.
