to think girls' school uniforms are utterly inadequate

My dd's school is at the top of a very breezy hill in the North. The playground is freezing. Nice, sensible child that she is, she has requested warm, tracksuit type trousers for the next term (how organised am I?).
But can I find any? Cotton-rich yoga pants that would probably be okay in a slightly chilly sports hall, yes. Tissue-thin trousers with sparkly embroidery at the waistband, yes. Turn-up "city shorts", yes.
A good thick pair of unbranded black fleece-lined joggers that will withstand a solid hour outside? No chance.
I know I could buy thermal long johns but it's just another layer to wash and she'll be roasting in the classroom.
If anyone knows of somewhere that sells girl's clothes suitable for an assault on K2 please let me know.
I guess I'll end up buying boys' clothes, but it does ANNOY me that girls are subject to the ridiculous rule that says they have to shiver in pretty silence while the lads can play kick-about in nice warm trackies.

The stretchy trousers in M and S are quite thick. Dd wore them all through primary (up North).

Scholes34 · 29/06/2012 14:24

Are we talking mountains or off-shore tax avoidance schemes here?

girlpancake · 29/06/2012 14:25

Actually, I would quite like to kit my daughter out for an assault on a tax avoidance scheme.

Lands end do thick fluffy inside classic sweatshirt fabric tops and bottoms in a range of colours. They may only have them on the US site though (.com rather than .co.uk) they are usually in the school uniform section, and come up longish. They are really cosy and soft, and very good quality. I know they do navy but I'm not sure about black.

silverten · 29/06/2012 14:33

If you're after plain tracky bums like the boys wear, can you not just buy them from wherever the boys get them??

girlpancake · 29/06/2012 14:37

nothing on landsend.co.uk but there's a couple on the .com site, thanks! She already has a landsend cardy and I know their stuff is nice and solid. didn't realise they do uniform in the US, I'll have to check the shipping costs.

I have just had to buy 'boys' gym shorts for DD1. Apparently shops round here think girls only wear cycling shorts for P.E?!

I have seen plain black tracksuit bottoms in a couple of supermarkets though, they are on the boys side of the school wear, but look pretty unisex to me.

girlpancake · 29/06/2012 14:40

I used to buy her boys trackies a couple of years ago but now she's 8 I'd rather get her something that doesn't look like her mum bought the wrong thing. She's a sensible kid but I think she would be put off them if someone said something.

Gap normally sell track suit bottoms that are quite thick.

girlpancake · 29/06/2012 14:41

Hmm, landsend.com is $28 shipping. Might wait and see when the winter range comes in to the uk site.

whatamistake, I bought cycling shorts for my dd because there was nothing else and they were just falling off her because she's pretty thin (probably also why she feels the cold). They were made to hug the body rather than have a waistband so they wouldn't stay up. Grrr.

PenisVanLesbian · 29/06/2012 15:04

tracksuits pants are tracksuit pants, your mistake is trying to find girls versions.Just buy normal ones, they aren't just for boys. All the kids in our school wear exactly the same.

HeadfirstForHalos · 29/06/2012 15:05

I've bought tracksuit bottoms from ASDA before now that have been warm enough. From the actual school P.E. range.

I bought some in Matalan the other day.

Plain black tracksuit bottoms, about £4 a pair

girlpancake · 29/06/2012 15:46

Thanks for all suggestions! Though I'm still a bit annoyed that actual girls trousers are so rubbish.

hellymelly · 29/06/2012 16:07

I agree girls trousers are rubbish-I buy unisex cords for my dds for Winter at school, or cord pinnies with proper wool tights.

valiumredhead · 29/06/2012 16:27

Asda and Teco sell black track suit bottoms, I've never had problems getting any.

BanoffeeSplitz · 29/06/2012 16:33

LA Gear (from Sports Direct) were the closest I could find to plain unbranded black trackies of a decent thickness & warmth. They were fleecy - there might even have been some with a woven outer layer IIRC.

They had elasticated bottoms, ie sportswear rather than smart school trousers.

valiumredhead · 29/06/2012 16:34

School uniform shop?

girlpancake · 04/07/2012 08:33

Just coming back to this. Landsend are stocking uniforms on their uk site for the first time from this summer, so am going back there in a couple of weeks.

sashh · 04/07/2012 09:40

Try the supermarkets, don't look in the uniform section, look in women's

GnocchiNineDoors · 04/07/2012 09:42

Thick tights under trousers / skirt / city shorts?
