To take my rabbits to the Green and let them munch to their hearts' content!

The grass at the Green down the road has not been cut for a while. It is chock full of dandelions and sweet clover (Lord! I sound like the 3 Billy Goats Gruff!).
In short, it is a Bunny Paradise!

So would I be unreasonable to take my rabbits down there for a treat?

I would:

Put them in a run so they didn't escape.
Clear up any bunny-currants produced during their indulgence.
Stay with them to keep them safe.

And just think of the savings for the Council if my rabbits cut down the grass for them!

Fine, but watch out for foxes.

5Foot5 · 28/06/2012 23:18

Sounds like a good idea. Our one guinea pig has her work cut out on our own lawn.

sc2987 · 28/06/2012 23:23

It might be common land anyway, in which case you have a right to graze livestock there :p

Mrsjay · 28/06/2012 23:23

bunnying mowing it may catch on Grin I dont see why not I hope the bunnies enjoy the buffet

WorraLiberty · 28/06/2012 23:24

If Sainsbos get any more expensive I may throw the kids in with them.

I'm not clearing up their shit though Grin

Mrsjay · 28/06/2012 23:24

bunny mowing*

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/06/2012 23:27

Leave the bunny currants, they'd be good fertiliser, but look out for dog pooh Envy

SecretPlansAndCleverTricks · 28/06/2012 23:27

Agree in principle, but might there be a risk of disease transmission from wild rabbits who have used the area?

clemetteattlee · 28/06/2012 23:29

I did this once but they got poorly from the pesticides the council sprayed on the dandelions. A very expensive vet trip followed.

Tanith · 28/06/2012 23:31

Oh good! I have been coveting it on their behalf for days now :)

It could well catch on - rabbit owners' contribution to the economy Grin

One of my BILs cuts the grass for his council and says the worst about it is that they let the grass get too long, then they end up chopping frogs and wildlife. Bunnies are much kinder!

Tanith · 28/06/2012 23:33

I don't think the Council bother with it at all, other than to cut it once in a blue moon. I'd better check first, though.
No sign at all of wild bunnies or dogs.

Rabbits in the wold infected with myxi can pass it on via glues/mites. I lost one last year this way

My bunny has a lead. He seems to really enjoy coming out sniffing around. He is more like a dog really and comes hopping over when I call his name!

AnyoneForTennis · 29/06/2012 00:00

.*flies

MidnightKnitter · 29/06/2012 00:01

If there is grass i'd put money on there being wild funniest there somewhere.Have yours had vaccinations? I'm pretty sure myxi is a close contact thing carried by fleas? VHD though i'm not sure about. YANBU if you are happy with any risks. Why not go the whole high and get a harness and lead to let them stretch their legs. I wonder if therein a shelter near me that would hire out half a dozen to tackle my lawn jungle

MidnightKnitter · 29/06/2012 00:03

bunnies not funniest
Blush xpost anyone.

AnyoneForTennis · 29/06/2012 00:06

Our vet is offering Vhd and myxi combined now for just £40. Once a year.

could you protect them if a couple of off-leash staffies chance by?

mayaswell · 29/06/2012 07:55

Or you could take big scissors and cut them a load of grass and dandelions and take them home for the buns?

rogersmellyonthetelly · 29/06/2012 08:16

In an enclosed run they should be safe from passing dogs and foxes (not sure why Staffies have been singled out here, they aren't generally any worse with small furries than any other type of terrier, jack Russell's tend to be far worse!) but personally I wouldn't. Even if vaccinated there are other nasties (e.cunniculi for one) which your rabbits could pick up. One of mine caught this from dandelions I picked from a similar location, he died after a short and extremely unpleasant illness. I still haven't forgiven myself.
