If you are not fat!
I have slimmed from a (generous 20) to a size 16. I went out with my sister the other evening and she commented on me still wearing my "fat" clothes. I've suddenly realised I have no idea how to dress if I'm not trying to cover fat bits!
I fancy lots of lovely work clothes but how do I dress for toddler duty? (Only work p/time.) What shops should I visit when I finally reach size 14? What on earth do I buy? Inspire me gorgeous ladies!
5ft 7 and nearly 40.

I wear a lot of Skinnies and Leggings. But generally go for a size too big so they are less clingy. Then team up with dresses, tunics etc.
I love the shape of skater dresses as they seem to suit my figure and 'skim' the undulations. Grin

I love trawling 2nd hand shops. Which can be a less expensive way of brightening a wardrobe. Some good labels around at the moment. (I am not massively label conscious but won't pay 2nd hand shop prices for stuff that comes from Primark etc when they won't be very durable IYSWIM)

If my old clothes suit it and aren't too baggy from losing weight, I find a belt uinder the bust line can give clothes a little more wear.

Well done though Smile it feels fab doesn't it!

Well done op! I'm afriad I can't help with the fashion tips as I live in jeans and t-shirts when not in work, and when in work I live in smart trousers and smarter t-shirts Blush so I came on here for tips Grin.

Doesn't pigletpower have form for those type of comments? I had to do a double take as I thought for a second I had walked into a zombie thread, her comments were so familiar.

Wolfiefan · 29/06/2012 19:51

Thank you all. Perhaps Piglet was concerned I would be deluded enough to wear gold hot pants and do a spinning around impression. Or jealous of my generous cleavage!?!

Well done on the weight loss.

All good tips so far- aim for clothing that shows off your new shape - it is some thing to be proud of.

However, do you plan to shrink further? You may not want to spend too much ££££ as you will soon have to go shopping again in yet a smaller size!

TenMinutesLate · 29/06/2012 20:04

Just to throw in my tuppence, I think you should try some coloured jeans....like the bright blues, purples, oranges and just team with a black tshirt, fitted but not tight, with a black blazer and ballet pumps.......can obvs put a shirt shirt for a smarter look but the jeans really bring a new lease of life to a wardrobe.

The lighter colours are not very flattering but bright darker ones look a treat, and remember to get ones with Lycra otherwise they will not be top running-after-toddler friendly.....surprisingly, as I always wore topshop jeans, dotty p's are brilliant. Right amount of Lycra and not cut too low, and under £25!

A chunky black necklace would look great, understated but wow.....

And well done on the weight loss, you've done amazing........you can borrow my gold hot pants anytime you like Wink

Meant "white shirt" not shirt shirt!

SoleSource · 29/06/2012 20:07

Fab tips Ten :)

TenMinutesLate · 29/06/2012 20:12

Thanks SoleSource......I look through all of AIBU and rarely add anything but clothes I can do Grin......

SoleSource · 29/06/2012 20:15

You seem as if you know what you're talking about. Is this your line of work? nosy

TenMinutesLate · 29/06/2012 20:32

Mwah SS, I wish!!! I just really like clothes, and love seeing a bit of effort being taken (obviously not listening to my own advice this evening as I'm sitting here in combats and a vest aka All Saints circa 1997) but i am the "gok" of the group and get asked, "where should I look for x,y or z" and "should I have this vest tucked in or out?".....makes me giggle because as soon as I'm home, it's primark fluffy jimjams....awwwwwww behind closed doors!!

Sorry OP, just hijacked your post! X

SoleSource · 29/06/2012 20:35

:) I'll make a note of your username, hoping you are here after Christmas when I have got to a size 10/12. I need fab advice like yours. I have 12 stones to ditch. Grin

NeverHaveIEver · 29/06/2012 21:24

Check out Polyvore for style ideas. I think your look matters more than where you shop but I'm a firm believer in the rule that women over 30 should try to avoid buying cheap clothes. Also, make sure you get fitted for new bras. Most essential part of any chesty lady's outfit.

Well done you. Keep up the good work and maybe you'll tell us your secret to dropping dress sizes.

Wolfiefan · 29/06/2012 21:47

Hijack away. Come and Gok me!

Sorry to say the obvious but a Boden wrap dress (other brands are available :)) shows off the Norks, emphasises the slim waist and can be flung over boots, sandals, vests, even jeans.

Congratulations on all your hard work

LucieMay · 29/06/2012 22:02

I'm a size 14 to 16 and believe me you still have to dress very carefully as some clothes will make you look like a whale. It's definitely not a size where you can wear what skinny girls wear and dress with abandon!

herecomesthsun · 29/06/2012 22:05

I went from 18-20 to 14-16; knee length skirts were a revelation.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/06/2012 22:08

Congratulations (and ignore the bitchy comment).

For really plain jersey dresses, which are super flattering, try The White Company (only in blacks, blues, greys though!). I'm a size 12 and need a size small in there, so you'd be fine with a medium or at most a large - don't worry if it says 'large' on the label - it's the body inside that matters, not the size!

I think Hobbs is worth a look too, as you are tall. Lots of their dresses are cut a bit on the long side, so are too long for me, but they will also probably be quite good at streamlining and may well flatter what you still think of as, 'too much of a tummy.' Lots of fab work jackets in their Outlet section too.

For toddler duty, try Oasis jeans - they do bootcuts called Scarlet, which are flattering for hips and tummies and they also do skinnies, but have forgotten what they are called - maybe Cherry?

ChaoticismyLife · 29/06/2012 22:09

Well done on your weight loss, OP :)

Afraid I can't give any advice as I spend half my life in jeans and t-shirts.
