I love our American brethren, but I do NOT want to listen to my dd endlessly witter on about 'I am really looking forward to prom' and 'everyone is tweeting about prom'

I keep on saying THE prom THE prom THE prom we do not live in Indianapolis and she Hmms at me.

I want to know when 'maths' became 'math'

I have no idea why it bugs the crap out of me but it does.

Feminine · 28/06/2012 12:02

Well(in this context) it comes from the US...its how the word is used there!

I did live very close to Indianapolis ...for 7 yrs. :)

shrimponastick · 28/06/2012 12:02

YANBU

sort her out!

ThisIsAUsername · 28/06/2012 12:03

ethelb · 28/06/2012 12:03

Feminine · 28/06/2012 12:04

But legos Confused I think thats where the S went Grin

cantspel · 28/06/2012 12:04

why cant she just call it the leavers disco like we did back in the 80's?

why do we have to try to copy the americans so much?

Mrsjay · 28/06/2012 12:04

DD1 went to prom and dd2 cant wait for her prom i think its just what they say I dont think it needs The in front

JosephineCD · 28/06/2012 12:05

I think "proms" should be BANNED.

ethelb · 28/06/2012 12:06

There were giant stretch limos all over Woking last night. including a PINK one with a load of shrieking coming from inside.

i took the coach to my summer ball thank you very much

boschy · 28/06/2012 12:06

what does 'prom' even stand for? I've always wondered...

PhyllisDoris · 28/06/2012 12:07

Its the thing here to say "Are you going town?" - meaning "are you going into town?" Used by teenagers when they're going nightclubbing or pubbing in local big town, not the little boring town where we live

picnicbasketcase · 28/06/2012 12:07

Yanbu, I think Summer Ball sounds waaaaay classier dude. Grin

ethelb · 28/06/2012 12:07

promenade i assumed...

Mrsjay · 28/06/2012 12:07

I thought like that Josephine i grumbled and moaned and huffed about it but dd and her friends looked amazing all the teens did dd did hers in 6th year (scotland) so most were 18 and they had an amazing time, and me and another mum who i had known since primary sobbed had something in our eye Grin

Mrsjay · 28/06/2012 12:08

It means promende doesnt it ?

Mrsjay · 28/06/2012 12:09

promenade*

WorraLiberty · 28/06/2012 12:10

Promiscuous?

Grin
gnushoes · 28/06/2012 12:10

and gotten. Where did THAT come from?

GetOrfMoiiLand · 28/06/2012 12:10

It was called THE prom when I went to mine.

Difference was that ours was held in the school sports hall, the catering was managed by the dinner ladies (!) and I wore a dress from the Kays catalogue and WALKED to the prom.

Dd's is being held in a very swish hotel in the Cotswolds. And she goes to a normal state school. Where do the kids from private school have their prom. Claridges?

Feel so me - I have taken a day off to take her shopping for prom shoes and a bag.

GetOrf - you should insist that she refers to it as a "leavers ball" at all times and withdraw all funding if she doesn't

WorraLiberty · 28/06/2012 12:12

It was called the 'School leaver's disco' when I had mine.

PandaWatch · 28/06/2012 12:12

Yy - wtf is with the s on legos?!

And pronouncing it lay-goes - it's leg-o ffs! Angry

boschy · 28/06/2012 12:14

well I assumed 'promenade' but that doesn't really make sense does it? because a 'promenade' is either a kind of walk (as in one takes a promenade in the evening), or a kind of walkway (like the prom by the sea). hmmm.
