Would you buy a cat D write off

A bit of back story, I was involved an a minor shunt 3 weeks ago.

The third party has decided to write my car off and offered me £1275 for my car as salvage on £925 with me keeping my car.

I'm happy to keep my car, it only has a minor bump in the boot (Scenic so quite high up) no suspension damage and perfectly driveable.

But the only thing is its possible resale value, should I decide to sell. Bearing in mind its had all the engine work done and is machanically A1.

So the question is would you buy a car with this history.

Would I buy it? No. But if you get £925 and get to drive it till it dies, I would do that.

No I wouldn't buy it. I did consider buying a camper that was a cat d write off, but it's re sale value would have been rubbish, so it wasn't worth it.

PizzaSlut · 27/06/2012 20:36

I'm planning to drive it for the next couple of years, but you never know whether I might come into some more money and want to replace it.

Just realised this should've been in chat.

I bought my car back after a cat D write off.

I wouldn't buy a car that is an insurance write off, because I wouldn't want to take the risk. I am only going to sell my car to the scrap merchants when it dies

ComposHat · 27/06/2012 21:08

I would buy one second hand, cat D write-off and I'd be surprised if many people would.

I think you either have to take the 1200 now and start looking for a new car or keep the car and accept that you'll have to keep it til it dies.

Personally, I'd pocket the 925quid and run it til it is fit for the scrapman.

PizzaSlut · 27/06/2012 21:15

I've put a picture of the damage on my profile And I'm happy thats its safe for my kids for £300+ quid I'm planning to keep til it dies and put the money aside for my next car.

OK WIBU to repair the dent?

If the car is worth just over a grand now, then even if it hadn't have been walloped, it might not fetch more than 600 quid or so in two or three years time.

ShellyBoobs · 27/06/2012 21:51

In the circumstances you've described, I'd keep it.

If they give you the £925 and the £1275 is a fair price for the car pre-accident, it only stands you at £350.

If you subsequently decide to sell it, you wouldn't have to get much for it to break even.

How about haggling with them? If you can get the car and £1000 I'd say you're onto a winner.

inabitofapickle · 27/06/2012 22:17

There is no problem with a cat d car. It's just uneconomic for the insurance to repair.

Beware though as it is now registered as that the resale value will decrease massively.
You also need to mention this when you insure the car- some insurance companies can be funny about insurine a car that is a previous total loss.

PizzaSlut · 27/06/2012 22:18

Thanks, I feel a bit more vindicated I've made the right decision.

Even if it lasts til tax and mot time in 4 months I should get back the salvage value.

I rang my insurance company, no probs with the insurance for it.

They assessed it initially, so have a full report of the damage. I may have to keep my insurance with them next year but hey ho. If they didn't even ask for an MOT now there should be no probs in 2 months.

We bought a Cat C write off that had been repaired - had to be re-VAed? to check it was safe etc (not just a standard MOT). I was very dubious, but DH was quite pro. It served us very well. We did know the guy who had repaired it though, so maybe more trust involved than buying off a random person repairing it.

Rowgtfc72 · 28/06/2012 17:50

Dh has bought a few cat d/c writeoffs. He buys them cheap ,we use them as the family car and sell them on.Think all repaired cat c/d cars have to be VIC checked( mot at special Vosa site) this certificate tells you the car is roadworthy. Just include this when you sell the car. As an aside its never proved a problem with insurance. Tis actually a very cheap way to buy a car from auction if you have the technical know-how to fix them up .

SandyBottoms · 28/06/2012 18:59

Personally I would take the 925 then sell the car (advertised as a cat d obv) potential viewers will already know from your ad that it's a cat d. You'll get significantly less for it but still more than the write off price (925+sale value=more than write off price) IYSWIM it's a win win.

thisisyesterday · 28/06/2012 19:03

no, i wouldn't.

in fact we just turned down a cat C write off, that was on for a good price.

knittynoodle · 28/06/2012 19:08

Parts. That's the only reason I'd buy a Cat D write off.

Nicole9317 · 06/06/2017 17:55

Old post but I brought a cat c honda write off 4 years ago and I've never had 1 thing wrong with it flew through every mot.

Percephone · 06/06/2017 19:46

Cat D means there is no structural damage. So it's just cosmetic and uneconomical to repair under insurance. As far as I'm aware you don't have to declare cat D when selling on.

TheFallenMadonna · 06/06/2017 19:48

We have bought cat D write offs before. But partly because they are cheaper, which might put you off? We have also kept a car that we bought as a write off after it was written off again!

TheFallenMadonna · 06/06/2017 19:52

No problems with insurance at all. Even after the second write off.

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 06/06/2017 19:58

I've bought two cat c write offs. Both fab vehicles that never let me down apart from general stuff which you'd expect and I had no trouble at all selling them on. I think you'd be a bit daft not to have it back for £350!

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 06/06/2017 19:58

Oh. Zombie thread 😂

TheFallenMadonna · 06/06/2017 20:00

Well, now I feel like an idiot!!
