To not understand why so many women think Christian Grey is the ideal man?

Now, to be fair I have not read this book - the main reason is it looks awful.

Having been involved in a BDSM relationship I know how damaging they can be and I'm just wondering why anyone would think a man like that is desirable?

Sorry if there have been similar threads.

I dont know anyone who thinks hes the perfect man.

The way he is written makes him sound very good at sex but i doubt any sane woman would actually want to be married to him.

McHappyPants2012 · 26/06/2012 19:18

Not the perfect man, however from The book he even said he is fifty shades of fucked up. This is a man with deep physiological issues.

However I like the fantasy behind it, but couldn't act on it

emblosion · 26/06/2012 19:31

I thought he was an utter horror and the girl a complete sap for not telling him to bog off, millions or no millions!

But then I thought the book was tripe, and I normally don't mind a bit of erotica.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/06/2012 19:44

It's a book. It is a fantasy. In RL he would be a horrendous partner. But maybe I dream a little bit about someone taking control, and healing their wounds so their true sweet nature comes through. Just a bit of escapism from real life.

blueglue · 26/06/2012 19:50

Probably because he is rich, good looking and fundamentally at the end of the 3rd book, a good person. He has serious problems but the point of fifty shades freed is just that- he becomes free.

The reason he likes to beat/dominate little brown haired women is that his mother looked like this, was a crack whore and gave him a shit upbringing. Author's words, not mine. Followed by him being a submissive to a much older woman when he was 15. At the end, he is a loving husband and father and life is perfect.

perceptionreality · 26/06/2012 19:58

Ah yes escapism - I can get that. At least there is a storyline of sorts then.

Tbh the sex sounded great but I would have kicked him in to touch at the first stalker incident!

anonacfr · 26/06/2012 20:11

HAHAHAHA loved the summary of his life.
He wanted to fuck and dominate mummy because an older woman used him as a gimp? Nice.

I downloaded the free sample on my Kindle and as expected it was shite. It was so Mills and Boon cliche I was bored just thinking about thos tedious characters.

Oblomov · 26/06/2012 20:25

Ideal Man? Who says he is the 'Ideal Man'?
Didn't know who he was, till I looked him up. I thought you meant David Gandy, who I saw on the cover of a magazine the other day. He is a good looking man.

Latara · 26/06/2012 20:31

Not my ideal man at all... i like men who know how to have a laugh, are looking for an equal partner, & who will accept me for who i am - independent & intelligent(ish) - someone who isn't shallow & materialistic & snobbish. Someone kind & thoughtful who will make me a cup of tea without asking, just like i would for them.

Obviously needs to be good in bed too. ;)

But Christian Grey - nooo i hate arrogant men - it would be constant rows i'm afraid - a man like that would really not like me at all (bothered? er, no.)

Latara · 26/06/2012 20:33

I like men who are funny & a bit mad - Robbie Williams or David Walliams - don't think i would ever get bored then!

TiggyD · 26/06/2012 20:36

It's also the most boring colour in the Dulux range.

Trills · 26/06/2012 20:48

They don't.

They also don't really mean to sound proud when they say "I'm just like
Bridget Jones, me"

Or I sincerely hope they don't, anyway.

Trills · 26/06/2012 20:48

Tiggy - it sounds like a dullsville less-imaginative Farrow&Ball name doesn't it? :o

Flobbadobs · 26/06/2012 21:21

I have a lot of friends on fb who will post that they are reading it and want a Christian Grey of their own.... Haven't read the book, don't want to either. i'm not into chick lit or Mills & Boon type crap!

carernotasaint · 26/06/2012 21:41

I have NO intention of reading Fifty Shades of Shite.
What gets me is loads of people are acting like its something new and its not. I read quite a few of the Black Lace books in the late "90s. Its all been done before Yawn.
Agree with Flobba in that i dont do chick lit Mills and Boon slush either.
I like a good crime novel. Nicci French is my fave and ive had people tell me that Sophie Hannah is really good too.

samandi · 26/06/2012 21:57

Who?

GeometricGiraffe · 26/06/2012 22:12

He's not. It's the whole Edward Cullen fascination just with BDSM involved. In fact, the character is EC which is even worse!

MutantPumpkin · 26/06/2012 22:21

Lol, typical tripe you'd expect women to read really! Totally fucked up man who has resources/looks/physique (obviously) to pleasure every female fantasy wrapped up in an NDA you have to sign before any 'hard' sex happens until he realises she's a virgin and therefore the rules change as he has to 'make love' to her 1st time! Crap book, crap writing, pretty much like pretty woman, obviously loads of billionaires hooking up with sunset boulevard hookers...reminds me why Carrie Grant was married so many times, his wives thought they were marrying Carrie Grant, what they got was Archie Leach without the scriptwriters.

perceptionreality · 27/06/2012 16:11

I love books but this sounds awful - I am determined not to give into the hype and read it. I'm a bit of a snob about books tbh.
