swearing

Is it pretty normal men swear when they hurt? My husband said 'fuck!' three times when he hit his toes on the steps. He usually doesnt swear unless it's really frstrating and did last night as it was very hurting.

I probably swear more than DP when I hurt myself. He favours a wordless (but loud) 'AAAAAARRRRRRGHHHHHHHHH' with occasionally an added 'YA BAM!'

I tend to stick to the classics: 'Fuck fuck fuck' or 'Jesus ...FUCK' or 'You FUCKER'.

LentillyFart · 26/06/2012 10:20

3 fucks for a stubbed toe? Bloody hell - I've done 10 fucks before I get out of bed in the morning.

As for swearing not being necessary - always cracks me up when someone says that. Of course it's fucking necessary Grin - there is nothing that can take it's place.

Bizzy Your children will hear more swear words at school than you have the time to say at home. If either of my DCs have ever copied a swear word I have told them off and explained it is a word they are not allowed to use. They would never swear in front of anyone but if they had heard something at school and had no idea it was 'naughty' they are more likely to repeat it without realising.

We don't really swear in front of the children but I was brought up with my dad swearing a lot - I would never have dreamed of swearing in front of him or another adult though - I still wouldn't really swear in front of him!

Oh and my personal favourite for an injury is 'SHIT-FUCK-BOLLOX'!

Dawndonna · 27/06/2012 14:38

I said 'Fuck' a lot last week as the surgeon removed my thumbnai. Mind you, I say it a lot, anyway.

ohchristFENTON · 27/06/2012 14:55

For a toe stub or hammer hitting a thumb DH says initially "fuck-it" then if there is prolonged pain i.e more than a millisecond, then he adds "fucking cunting fucking thing"

SoleSource · 27/06/2012 15:13

Oui il est normal.

MissFaversam · 27/06/2012 15:20

I'm also a swearer when I hurt myself and don't stop till the pain subsides either Grin

Losingitall · 27/06/2012 15:24

What is the issue with swearing? Whether you swear in front if your kids or not they will at some point swear!

Teach them what's appropriate and in context.

It's unavoidable so get on with it.

As for 3 fucks pretty restrained umoGrin

Swearing when you've injured yourself can help relieve the pain. Really, it's true! Did anybody else watch Fry's Planet Word (Episode 3, Uses and Abuses) when it was on TV last year? Stephen Fry and Brian Blessed holding their hands in a tank of ice water and seeing how long they could tolerate it with and without the swearing... hilariously funny AND educational... there might still be a clip of it somewhere on YouTube (I can't look for it now as I'm at work)

Magneto · 27/06/2012 15:47

Didn't Stephen Fry do an experiment about how swearing helps with pain.

I shouted "fuck" at ds the other day (very shamed I did it) but he threw an articulated lorry at my head and I wasn't even expecting it. I think it's a natural reaction.
