My mother has been phoned by the "Ministry of Justice" claiming they have £3.5K of bank charges in her name to give to her. The lady from the MOJ phoned a few weeks ago when my father was dying and I took the call. I believed it was fairly genuine so convinced my mother to phone them back today. They haven't had any information from her i.e. bank details etc but have said that they need to send a representative to give her the cheque and that the cheque is made out to cash so she might want to go to the bank and cash it. At the end of the call they also told her she had to pay £99 solicitors fees. After googling scams I realise this is a classic so AIBU to wait for their representative to come round with said cheque on Wednesday at 3.00pm and thoroughly enjoy the ensuing piss take?

I had a guy call the other day witha well known scam (trying to sell advertising in a non-existent Police magazine). I'd been called before so I asked him sweetly to hang on while I got a pen, then did the washing up and had a cup of tea while he was still hanging on (or at least he couldn't make another call) Wink

I wouldn't want any criminal knowing my name or address let alone invite them to the house.
I'd contact the police and see if they can have someone present
It's more likely that no one will turn up until fees are paid, then more fees, then admin charges etc etc
If a cheque was issued to be cashed it is most likely to be fraudlent or fake which you will only find out well after you have handed over the cash
