IN THE PARK WITH DD, 2 YEARS.she befriended a little girl , the child had a bag of crisps and dd asked for one, childs mum gave her one.i was a few feet away. i then gave dd a bag of twigletts and she gave the child one. the mother came screaming over saying " she has a dairy allergey, what is it you are giving her?"

if my child had allergies i would surely ask before handing out food to other children dont you think?

I don't think either of you were in the wrong.

tryingtonotfeckup · 25/06/2012 16:51

And the issue is?

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/06/2012 16:52

Seems weird to shout at you for doing exactly what she did. YANBU.

pinkdelight · 25/06/2012 16:52

what did you expect her to say? it wasn't a criticism of you. she just wanted to stop her little girl having an allergic reaction. YABU if you think anyone was BU! And Twiglets are yuck!

hifi · 25/06/2012 16:52

thats what i thought

she was bu if she was actually full on screaming. if not and it was just minor panic then neither of you were being unreasonable.

i expect you have taken a normal panic reaction to heart a bit as im guessing your probally worried you did something wrong

Do you mean she actually screamed at you, or that she rushed over in a panic and asked you what you were giving the child?

I do wonder why she didn't think to ask you if your child had allergies. I would have thought that if her child does, it would be something she would think to ask others. Maybe she thought you'd rush up screaming if that was the case Grin

And yes, I would ask if a child had allergies before offering them anything. Also whether the parent wanted them to have it.

JumpingThroughHoops · 25/06/2012 16:54

I agree with the OP; if you have a child with allergies that should make you more aware that allergies can be more common place and would check before giving foodstuffs to another child.

If your child didn't have an allergy, and you weren't living with it day to day, then you would encourage sharing without a second thought.

AlmostAHipster · 25/06/2012 16:54

YABU for not correcting your child for asking for crisps from a random child.
She was being U for 'screaming', if she really did.

thisisyesterday · 25/06/2012 16:56

quite frankly if my child had an allergy that could kill them i would rush up screaming too!!!

were the crisps she gave your DD plain old ready salted crisps? if so then I am guessing that's why she didn't feel the need to ask as it's highly unlikely your child would be deathly allergic to potato or oil?

Abbicob · 25/06/2012 16:57

I think the diff here is that your child asked for the crisp and was given one. The other mother was not involved in that. Your child then went to share her crisps back - which was kind of her to do so I think to be honest it was "one of those things" and the other mother having seen the affect of dairy was naturally worried.

She was unreasonable to shout though.

thisisyesterday · 25/06/2012 16:58

i also think there is a difference with where you are when this happens.

if you're standing up close to your child and someone offers her something you would presumably say something if she couldn't have it.
so maybe she thought you woudl have said "no, she can't have one"?

whereas when you offered her DD one she was too far away to see what it was?

Blu · 25/06/2012 17:01

Just because she had given your child a crisp she didn't expect her child to then be given something - it took her by surprise.
What Abbicob said.
It was just one of those things - just shrug about it.

G1nger · 25/06/2012 17:01

Well.... You could both try giving your children proper food Wink

hifi · 25/06/2012 17:27
