AIBU to think that 50 Shades of grey is just rubbish?

Ok so there's a bit of a 'love' story there and it's soft porn for those who like a bit of light bondage but on the whole it's just not very good.

It's not as erotic as the author probably thinks it is, it's extremely repetitive and predictable and is certainly not 'liberating' as some have said.

I'm also sure I'm not being unreasonable to think that noone other than in their teenage fantasies has an orgasm the first time they have sex or makes a guy come in 10 seconds the first time her lips ever touch a penis.

YANBU it is utter drivel and badly written repetitive rubbish imo.

hermionestranger · 29/06/2012 11:49

Just downloaded the free sample on my kindle. What a pile of unadulterated shite!

GeekCool · 29/06/2012 11:51

YANBU and I haven't read it. I've heard enough about the gist of it. How people think it is romantic or that Grey is the sort of guy women could fall for is beyond me. He sounds very abusive and I'm NOT talking about the BDSM stuff.

manicbmc · 29/06/2012 12:12

It is a pile of crap that was initially written as a piece of Twilight fan fiction. Then someone had the bright idea to change the names and publish it. Hmm

It is even more poorly written than the Twilight books, and that is some achievement.

Dear MMHQ, please could we either have a new section for people to discuss 50 shades to their heart's content & people who are sick of hearing about it can ignore...or just stop any new threads about it being started?

Thank you (sick of 50 shades now)

soozeedol · 29/06/2012 13:06

not laid eyes on this book yet...keep hearing about it though...so I'll have to get hold of it and see for myself

I've been single quite a while so maybe I'll enjoy the sex in it...or maybe I'll be laughing...I'll then need to choose carefully about who I pass it on to......

soozeedol · 29/06/2012 13:08

if it's that bad...I'll probably find it in a 2nd hand shop fairly soon eh hahahahaha

roastednut · 29/06/2012 14:11

It's total crap, badly written and annoying characters. I was sad to see a facebook friend put up a photo thing earlier which says something like ' men! if you need a manual for how to treat women read this book'. Unreal and depressing.

manicbmc · 29/06/2012 14:18

Let's face it, if a man needs a manual about how to treat another person, then he's really not worth knowing.

"Yes he was ... He was beaten up and had cigarettes put out on his skin by his birth mothers boyfriend/drug dealer. It's mentioned several times. Plus when he was 15 he was groomed for the kinky sex by his adopted mothers friend, 'Mrs Robinson'"

Shit, my sincere apologies, I had completely forgotten about that first bit and only remembered the Mrs Robinson bit. Blush

It just shows that despite having read the books, they are so badly written that the bits of story that could have been much better developed and explained to be integral to the book were dotted briefly inbetween repetetive and quite frankly, boring sex chapters.. and easily missed. I read all three books in as many days, and have to say I got to the point where I was just skimming over the pages to get to the end as I hate to start a book and not finish it.

A good author could have written these books with the same theme, but made them into a far more interesting work of fiction.

I still can't get my hands on a copy to be able to comment [grrrr]

Friend is reading it and she thinks it great, mind you she likes Martina Cole (once you've read one, you've read the lot)

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 29/06/2012 14:29

Where we're you people on my "Christian grey is abusive" thread Grin

squeakytoy · 29/06/2012 14:30

It is worse than Martina Cole... and I agree, her books are absolutely crap nowadays.. her first few were great, then she ran out of ideas and just uses some sort of auto-shuffle now from her first lot of books...randomly putting the sentences into the book. She also has a very limited vocabulary and her characters constantly refer to skullduggery, which I have never heard anyone in London use in their conversation.

YANBU

I wasn't going to bother but someone posted on FB a link to a site where they could be nicked downloaded for free. Definitely a pile of old wank. A decent Black Lace book would have some action in the first couple of pages and be better written.

carernotasaint · 29/06/2012 21:34

Black Lace are relaunching in September.
I was in tesco earlier and Black Lace have re released The Ninety Days of Genevieve by Lucinda Carrington. its got a plain grey cover this time and the tagline "if you liked Fifty Shades youll love this"

I read loads of the BL books in the "90s but from what ive seen about Fifty Shades im giving it a wide berth.
What gets me is ive seen loads of people on facebook raving as if erotic fiction is a brand new thing. (not that fifty shades is erotic IMO) from whats been posted above it sounds pretty disturbing.
