toilets and school

my dd is 4 and still at nursery. she came home yesterday saying that she wasn't allowed to go to the loo. I asked why and she said because she was playing and not handwashing the other day she is only allowed to go with an adult but because there was no-one to take her she wasn't allowed to go! I find this out of order - if she is naughty tell her off, put her in time out or whatever thats fine but to use the toilet as a punishment i find wrong, if they will only let her go with an adult then they should take her but if there is not enough staff to do this they should have found another punishment. she is normally a very well behaved child at school and was quite upset about not getting to go to the loo and came home with a tummy ache. Am i right to want to speak to her teachers about this?? sorry for the long post ;-s

YANBU

But it might have been that she was told to wait a minute until they found someone to supervise her and then she ran off to play?

Either way, you should speak to the staff and find out exactly what happened.

I think you should query it. But in a childs mind 'not allowed' can actually be 'wait a moment until Mrs X come back' or 'its 5 mins till break you can go then'.

Yes speak to the teachers...you may find out that she is confused, perhaps they meant she had to go with an adult that day but hadn't meant it for other days, she's very little to have to wait.

Thanks I did think it was a bit strange but she has stuck to the same story since she finished at half 11 on friday and was so upset she wasn't bothered about telling me she had been in trouble lol. I hate the thought of them using toilets as punishment and it makes me wonder about times when she has had an "accident" at school when she never does at home or when playing at friends but at the same time don't want to sound like an over excited mummy!!

It doesn't sound like a punishment...just that she needs supervising by an adult.

But if that's the case, they need to make sure an adult is available.
