to have accidentally destroyed two Kindles in the last fortnight

I've broken two Kindles within the last two weeks. I have no idea what happened - both times just took them out of their cases to find the screens damaged.

I got my first Kindle 3 years ago, and replaced it after I accidentally threw it down the stairs (that was unquestionably my fault) about 9 months ago. I'm normally very very careful of my lovely kindle though... just don't understand what I'm doing wrong.

Kindle support are AMAZING. They're replacing it free of charge (again!). And they didn't even tell me off! I do carry it around (inside its case) in my bag - but that's normal isn't it? Don't know how much more careful I can reasonably be...?

Eeek!

What type of case is it in? Mine is in a pretend leather case, but I'm thinking about getting one of those foam pouches to put it in as well.

Do you carry around a lot of bricks in your handbag?

Bestb411pm · 23/06/2012 19:41

That's pretty impressive Grin

There's nothing inside the cover is there? Do you have tiger claws instead of nails?

NoGoodNamesLeft · 23/06/2012 19:43

I have one of those protective clear screen stickers on mine too. I would wrap it in cotton wool if I could see through it. Grin

You got better service than me then. They wanted £50 to replace it with a refurbished one with 3 months warranty - when I could buy a new one with a years warranty for £80!

MonaLotte · 23/06/2012 19:43

I had mine in one of the neoprene pouches in my bag but was paranoid about the screen being damaged and now have a more rigid book type cover from eBay for it. What kind of cover do you have?

MrsMellowDrummer · 23/06/2012 19:44

It's in a sort of fake leather pouch thing. Properly designed for a kindle keyboard, but not made by Amazon. I asked the lovely customer support guy I spoke to if that could be the problem, but he seemed to think not. I've just ordered an amazon leather case though... just in case.

Maybe I should also get some kind of foam case thing too? Or is that overkill?

I'm in slight panic mode I have to say... The thought of life without my kindle...?

JeezyPeeps, what happened to yours?

I have heard (through the amazon message boards) that if damage occurs, and it's unexplained, they usually replace for free. If you've done something daft (like me chucking it down the stairs), they're not quite so generous.

Maybe they looked at my account and realised my e-book addiction is worth quite a lot to them!

I had to pay for a replacement too. The damage was my fault but there was certainly no free replacement.

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 23/06/2012 20:32

I have to second how amazing Amazon kindle support were. Long story short, OH brought severely broken (twat didn't read description properly, or see big fuck-off picture showing screen smashed to this side of fuck!!) Kindle off ebay for dirt cheap price. It took a bit of too-ing and fro-ing (hard to get serial no off a Kindle with a smashed screen, then get original owners to de-register it so you can!) to get kindle attached to my account. Once kindle in my name Amazon replaced it for a new one for free within two days (it was under a year old at this point so still under warrenty).

hermionestranger · 23/06/2012 20:34

Dh kindle had screen problems when it was new, looked like the ink had run iykwim and it was replaced free of charge and old one collected and returned!

MonaLotte · 23/06/2012 21:36

The amazon kindle leather one is sturdy so that should help a good bit.

Thymeout · 23/06/2012 23:29

I dropped mine on a quarry tiled floor. Obviously my fault. Amazon support replaced it for £60 provided I sent the broken one back. They also talked me through downloading the free Kindle app on to my laptop so I could finish the book I was reading while I waited for the replacement to arrive. Phew! I find the app v useful for books with illustrations or photographs, better resolution.

Now have a proper leather Amazon cover which so far is doing a good job.

I have a Kindle and, as a back up, I have the Kindle app on two iPhones, two iPads and could put it on my MacBook too. Just in case :o

I loved my Amazon leather cover for my Kindle Keyboard.....until the Kindle started freezing and resetting where I was reading, to the end or to the beginning of what I was reading.

Apparently, the metal clips that slot into the side of the Kindle can cause shorting out and that was the problem.
They refunded the cost of the case and I've got a case that holds it in with elastics instead. Not as smart as the official case though.

valiumredhead · 24/06/2012 18:07

Talking of Kindle covers, I have still not found 'the' one for me

And don't get me started on the lights, they are such ugly things, I do NOT want to attach one of them to my lovely sleek Kindle Hmm

The Amazon Kindle covers are stupidly expensive though with the built in lights - nearly as much as the bloody Kindle!
