to think gambling is far too prevalent on TV and society in general

In the last couple of days, all I seem to have seen was various forms of gambling being advertised. I've seen adverts for online bingo companies, betting on football and betting on horse racing on multiple occaisions. There seems to be more and more bookmakers appearing on the high street as well. I can't help feel that it is dangerous and that it should be far more controlled as people ruin their lives doing it. DH thinks its fair enough and says no-one forces people to bet. AIBU?

YANBU. My DP is a (recovering) gambling addict, its horrendous, I hate seeing it all over tv as if it's something fun/glamourous/easy to win a fortune... there is no TV advertising for tobacco/drugs, I feel this should be treating in the same way.

YABU no-one forces people to bet and gambling can be great fun. Just because some people can't do it responsibly doesn't mean it should be restricted for everyone. I accept I might be a bit biased as I've had a good day on the Gee Gees at Royal Ascot.

YABU if you get yourself in the trouble because Ray Winston told you have a flutter on the next goal scorer in the half time advert break then you're a fool. It's no elses fault but your own.

YANBU I was amzed this afternoon when I switched the TV to see the BBC displaying the various odds and then were bigging up the fact that someone had a £100,000 bet on a horse. Mind you the Government used to own a bookmakers until very recently and the Queen also owns racehorses according to the news last night

Bnad and Maggio gambling is highly addictive though and people can get trapped into doing it compulsively and it just seems to me to be far too glamourised in society without any considerations of what can happen should it get out of control.

YANBU I saw an advert the other day that was suggesting that betting on England at a particular bookies (I can't remember which one) was a patriotic act Hmm .

aiton · 23/06/2012 20:37

YANBU gambling and its potentially damaging side effects are often ignored with people focussing on smoking and alcohol but it can be just as damaging to sicety.

society

aedes · 23/06/2012 23:34

YABU if people want to gamble their money away then it is there right to do so.

Heavensmells · 23/06/2012 23:47

YABU
Gambling like alcohol is fine in moderation. It is highly addictive IMHO but so are lots of things.
The government need to step up and keep a tight reign on places that offer the opportunity to gamble. I work for one of the major high street bookies and they do entice people to gamble in a big way with loyalty cards and promotions. I have seen people ruined by it but I have also seen many people who net what they can afford and who genuinely enjoy it.

Heavensmells · 23/06/2012 23:49

bet what they can afford obviously! Why should they lose out on best deals advertised because others cannot control themselves?

MsVestibule · 24/06/2012 00:04

YANBU. I particularly hate online gambling - it's far, far too easy to go online and gamble more than you intended to on your credit/debit card.

At least with bookies, their opening hours are restricted and you're maybe less likely to "impulse" gamble.
