How much ketchup are you getting for £19? Shock

And why are you buying it? Confused

WorraLiberty · 22/06/2012 22:46

I grew up with a girl who put ketchup on everything.

I never thought it was rude, but at times it was disheartening if I'd put a lot of effort into cooking something.

I thought she'd grow out of it but she's 46 and is still the same Grin

TheSkiingGardener · 22/06/2012 22:55

I had a party the other day. Food included sausages. Remembered to dig the ketchup out of the fridge and commented to someone that it was lucky we had some as we hardly ever used it.

Her response was to be completely flummoxed. She then asked "So what did you DO?" I explained we ate food without ketchup, which she struggled to comprehend.

That's when ketchup is a problem rather than a condiment.

rhondajean · 22/06/2012 22:55

My mother has a lot of food allergies and as a result I grew up with very bland, unpalatable foods. I used to put ketchup on everything. Well not everything, her soup was tasty!

Then I moved out and realised most food actually has a taste. There are some things it's perfect with - chips, fish fingers etc but by an large, lumping ketchup on everything is rude yes, it's also a sign of an underdeveloped palate, why oh why ae you giving this person beef Wellington and lobster, they obviously don't like it, give them birds eye chicken nuggets and fish fingers instead!

WorraLiberty · 22/06/2012 22:57

But how can personal taste ever be rude?

I really don't get that? Confused

If someone simply doesn't like food without ketchup and (like my friend) just can't enjoy any food without it...how is that actually rude of her?

rhondajean · 22/06/2012 23:00

It can be rude when it's offensive to others who have out a lot of effort into it surely?

Sparks1 · 22/06/2012 23:01

Rude? No.

Unsophisticated and a grown child that's never developed a pallete? Yes.

Socknickingpixie · 22/06/2012 23:32

Well I get it because I am concerned they will get the shakes actually that's a joke but on a serious note will they notice the sufferance if I switch to none branded stuff?

I am going to switch the food I give them to something less time consuming as IMHO with that much ketchup they will just taste ketchup

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 22/06/2012 23:35

See my mate could taste everything through the ketchup

She just couldn't eat it without it cos she was weird Grin

In the same way that if you smother your sunday roast in gravy, you can still taste everything you're eating....but with gravy on I suppose?

rhondajean · 22/06/2012 23:36

Sainsburys own make is made by Heinz. I've switched (I do still buy ketchup!)

Socknickingpixie · 22/06/2012 23:44

I tend to only put gravey on the potatos if I have a roast but then again I always do my gravey last so usually there's only a little bit left for me

OP posts:
rhondajean · 22/06/2012 23:49

I'm thinking- gravy is made from the juices of the meal so compliments the taste.

Ketchup is just ketchup, and it is actually quite an overpowering, strong taste.

SPsFanjoLovesBrokenBiscuits · 22/06/2012 23:49

Gravy is the blood of the devil!

Socknickingpixie · 22/06/2012 23:56

Snorted goggle drink gone up nose,

I feel the same way about baked beans

First, I'm with Worra, how can someone's preferences be rude? If they like ketchup on everything, then it means they like ketchup, not that they don't like your food. Especially if they are eating your food, they like it! If they don't eat your food, then perhaps they are being rude. especially if they say, This tastes like shit, even ketchup can't fix it!

Second, why two spellings of Ketchup/catsup? I always use the second, because it spells Cat's up, which is what I think of ketchup. Perhaps this is only in the US where we have the two spellings?

Noqontrol · 23/06/2012 00:03

You have to get the measurements of the ketchup just right. Not so much that it overpowers the food, just compliments it.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 23/06/2012 00:05

Toxi, although you are right on everything else, catsup is not a spelling of ketchup! That's just one of those bizarre words that you Americans have decided to make up and force into the English language! Grin

Socknickingpixie · 23/06/2012 00:30

Outraged I said none bunfight starting topic, oh wait a sec I said hopefully
as you were, continue

OP posts:
CouthyMow · 23/06/2012 00:35

YABU for saying 'catsup'. It sounds like you are talking about something a cat's brought up.

IT'S KETCHUP!

And it IS rude to slather every foodstuff with it, no matter how much time has gone into preparing it.

And £19 worth, for an adult with no income? IMO the Ketchup fairies would just stop visiting...

Socknickingpixie · 23/06/2012 00:58

But I didn't say catsup I've never said it I didn't know it existed befor I read it on here and I promise to never say it twasnt me was a different person

OP posts:
madonnawhore · 23/06/2012 01:00

YABU if you don't keep it in the fridge.

Socknickingpixie · 23/06/2012 01:03

Can't I just keep it in the bin

OP posts:
madonnawhore · 23/06/2012 01:05

FIGHT!

sashh · 23/06/2012 03:25

If it is on the table then fine, if you have to ask for it then rude.

ToxicMoxie · 23/06/2012 04:38

catsup is pronounced the same way! it's some crazy east coast spelling. There's a simpson's episode on it even.
